Hayden Panettiere's TV show Nashville to end its run after upcoming sixth season airs

The country music series Nashville will return for its sixth and final season in January, ending a show that had to handle the jump to another network and the loss of a key star.

Cancelled by ABC after four seasons, Nashville jumped to CMT but creators are now pulling the plug after more than 120 episodes, citing 'creative' reasons, reported E!.

The show starring Hayden Panettiere, 28, has produced hits on the Billboard country charts, spawned U.S. tours and earned Connie Britton, 50, both Emmy and Golden Globe nominations.

Rayna Jaymes, played by Britton, was killed off the show in the middle of the fifth season.

She was the queen of country and also the lead character, which is why fans were so shocked when her character died sitting in a police car after a truck hit her.

It seemed the American Horror Story alum was just as upset as her fans as she took to Instagram to post a heartfelt tribute on Thursday: 'Thank you Rayna Jaymes. For your magic and your dignity. And thank you to all the creators of Rayna Jaymes, for there were many.

'Callie Khouri, who gave her life.... Along with countless other compatriots and combatants. And then of course the crew of “Nashville" who brought her to life, every crew member in every department who made Rayna live each week.'

The show, which also stars Hayden Panettiere, Sam Palladio, Jonathan Jackson, Clare Bowen, Lennon Stella, Maisy Stella and Chris Carmack, was axed by ABC after four seasons.

However, it was then picked up by CMT with new showrunners for a fifth season, before Friday's news apparently sealed its fate for good.

The sixth and final 16-episode season of Nashville premieres January 4 and will air in two chunks, with the finale coming this summer.

Episodes also stream on Hulu the day after they air on CMT.
