Simon Cowell looks dishevelled as he heads home following red carpet return at the Music Industry Trusts Award... after The X Factor receives its record LOWEST ever audience

  • The ITV show drew in 4.3 million viewers on Sunday - its lowest ever viewing figure since it began in 2004
  • A spokesperson for the show said: 'This series of The X Factor is consolidating at an average of seven million viewers per episode based on the current ratings system. This does not include either repeats or any non-linear viewing'

Simon Cowell looked somewhat dishevelled as he left the Music Industry Trusts Award on Monday night.

Ditching his jacket, the music mogul, 58, appeared slightly bleary-eyed as he headed home from the star-studded event, held at London's Grosvenor House.

The Syco owner still appeared to be in good spirits however as he playfully posed for cameras and bid his fellow guests farewell - despite The X Factor receiving its lowest ever audience of 4.3 million on Sunday.

The father-of-one cut a more casual figure as he made his exit, with his smart blazer draped over one arm.

Clearly relaxed after his night out, he left his shirt unbuttoned to the middle and flashed a smile at cameras, as he made a bleary-eyed departure from the bash.

Still in good spirits from the evening however, Simon was seen bidding a number of guests farewell with a warm hug, as he headed to his car.

On the carpet, Simon had looked far more well-rested as he posed for cameras, following his recent horror fall down the stairs.

The music industry event recognises the best talent in the UK music business, in aid of charities Nordoff Robbins and Brit Trust.

Simon donned a tailored navy pinstriped suit, undoing a few buttons to flash a hint a chest.

Simon cut a relaxed figure at the industry do, despite recent reports he had just two years to turn The X Factor's fortunes around or else it would be axed.

Sunday night's show received only 4.3 million viewers - marking its lowest ever viewing figure since it first began in 2004.

The show fell far behind its rival Strictly Come Dancing, which drew in more than 11 million as favourite Aston Merrygold was voted out in a shock dance-off.

However both reality shows were trounced by the BBC's Blue Planet II, which hauled in a mammoth average of 10.8 million across its second hour-long episode.

Tense: Again, according to the Daily Star, ITV bosses are even considering axing the famous singing competition in two years' time if ratings do not improve

According to the Daily Star, ITV bosses are even considering axing the famous singing competition in two years' time if ratings do not improve.

A source told the paper:  'The show's latest ratings are embarrassing. It used to be one of the real jewels in the crown for ITV.'

However, an X Factor spokesperson told MailOnline: 'This series of The X Factor is consolidating at an average of seven million viewers per episode based on the current ratings system. This does not include either repeats or any non-linear viewing via computer or mobile phone.'

Meanwhile Simon looked back to full health at the event, after being stretchered out of his London mansion to hospital in a neck brace last week.

The mogul had been going to get a cup of hot milk to help him fall asleep, when he fainted and fell down the stairs.

He looked dazed as he arrived home that afternoon, looking slightly dishevelled in tracksuit bottoms and trainers.

Speaking at his front door he said: 'I fainted and fell down the stairs. I've got a bit of concussion. I feel better now.' He also thanked fans for their 'concern'.

And it seems after the drama subsided, the music boss was keen to overhaul his exercise regime.

He is said to be launching into a fitness kick and is reportedly splashing out on seven electric bicycles at a cost of almost £60,000 so he can cycle to and from work.

Simon underwent a series of blood tests after passing out and tripping at home last Friday and as a result is keen to get fit whilst doctors examine the cause of his fainting.

Known to be a bit of a petrol head - with a fleet of cars including a Bentley, Rolls, Bugatti Veyron and an Aston Martin DB9 - Simon's latest investment is a little more environmentally friendly.

Whilst the four mile round trip to work is hardly arduous - especially given the bike is electronically powered - the X Factor mogul believes he has already seen an improvement in his fitness.

Simon has been out of action all week and reportedly convalescing out of London.
