'We have to rise above': Demi Lovato hits out at body-shamers by sharing cruel tweets during Sorry Not Sorry performance at American Music Awards

She previously quit all social media after online trolls became too much for her to bear.

And 25-year-old Demi Lovato returned fire to her haters on Sunday when she took the stage at LA's Microsoft Theater to perform her song Sorry Not Sorry.

But before performing, actual mean tweets about the singer were projected onto a screen, including one calling the former Barney & Friends child actress 'fat' and another that said 'I hate you'.

As the Skyscraper hitmaker strolled up to the stage, she told the star-studded crowd, 'There’s so much hate in this world. We have to rise above. And never say sorry.'

She then launched into the lead single off her latest album Tell Me You Love Me called Sorry Not Sorry with a bevy of backup dancers behind her.

The song was intended as a put down to trolls who body-shamed her and haters in general.

Earlier in the evening, Demi also created a stir by bringing as her guest to the AMAs Virginia's first openly transgender legislator Danica Roem.

The hitmaker is a vocal activist for transgender rights and last year took a stand against North Carolina's now infamous bathroom law during the 2016 Billboard Music Awards.

Demi turned heads at this year's awards show; the dark haired beauty looked incredible in a strapless lace gown.
