Police divers are searching shark-infested waters for a 29-year-old snorkeller who disappeared while searching for lobsters at Port Stephens two days ago.

Scott McGuire went snorkelling with a friend off Birubi Point at Anna Bay, about 4pm on Sunday. The area is a well-known breeding ground for deadly great white sharks.

Police were notified when he failed to return to shore or appear at his home.

Authorities searched the waters between Birubi Point and Boat Harbour on Monday and again at 11.30am on Tuesday.

Police have urged fishermen or anyone else with information to come forward.

Mr McGuire is of Caucasian appearance, slim with shaved brown hair.

He was last seen wearing red board shorts, black flippers and goggles and a clear snorkel. He was carrying a small mesh bag.

Police are reportedly concerned he may have gotten into trouble in the water and drowned, or been taken by a shark.

His disappearance follows a shark attack on a 31-year-old surfer at the same beach last month.

The surfer swam to the shore at Birubi Beach with puncture wounds to his foot.
