Eurotunnel has changed its name to Getlink as part of a corporate rebranding ahead of Brexit.

The French Company that manages and operates the Channel Tunnel said that it wanted to adopt a 'very Anglo-Saxon' name as it expands business interests.

The rebranding will only take place at a corporate level, as customers will continue to book the shuttle service between Folkestone and Calais with Eurotunnel's Le Shuttle Service.

The firm said that the rebranding was necessary because many customers and investors are British, and the switch will allow the company to 'stop thinking about the past and start thinking about the future in a positive way'.

The switch will likely draw comparisons to other companies that have attempted rebrandings over the years.

In 2001, the Post Office tried to rebrand to Consignia, but the new name was rescinded just a year later.

The new name might also remind customers of the Sealink ferry service, which went out of operation when the Eurotunnel started operating in the 1990s.

A Getlink spokesman confirmed that directors had come up with the name and approved by Getlink's Anglo-French board.

He said: 'No massive expensive brand identity organisation came in. It's Get – go and acquire – and Link. It's not fancy, it's not invented. It's very Anglo-Saxon – and a large part of our customer base and investor base is Anglo-Saxon.'

The spokesman said that the group now owns companies beyond just the tunnel, so it saw the name change was necessary.

Getlink owns Europorte, which runs freight through the tunnel, and the Cliffco Euorpean railway training centre.

The company also owns ElecLink, a projected power line connecting French and UK national grids.
