Steve Smith scores 141 on day three of first Ashes Test

LAWRENCE BOOTH IN BRISBANE: Australia captain Steve Smith delivered a captain's performance as he scored 141 runs to help the hosts chase down England's first innings total. Smith reached triple figures off his 261st ball and finished not out as Australia scored 328 to surpass England's total of 302 from the first innings and establish a lead of 26 runs.  And the pendulum swung further to the hosts as they took the early wickets of Alastair Cook and James Vince before England had even wiped out the deficit.

NEW PAUL NEWMAN AT THE GABBA: Steve Smith produced one of his finest centuries to give Australia the advantage then wasted no time in attempting to inflict some psychological damage.

Just when England thought they had the upper hand, Steve Smith produced a masterful captain's innings to swing the first Test back towards Australia.

NEW England's bowlers tried to coax Steve Smith into hooking by any means possible, but in the end it was their own reliable run scorer who fell into the trap.

England 20-18 Tonga: Match report

ENGLAND 20-18 TONGA - MIKE KEEGAN: With seven minutes to play, Wayne Bennett’s men led 20-0 on the back of an excellent performance and were in cruise control. And then something incredible came from nowhere. A Tongan whirlwind saw the South Sea Islanders almost complete one of the greatest comebacks in the sport’s history, scoring three converted tries in just five incredible minutes to set up the finale to end all finales.

Chelsea add 'Mystique' to squad on arrival in Liverpool

The Chelsea team have added 'Mystique' to their line-up ahead of the crucial Premier League clash against Liverpool on Saturday.  The Blues squad arrived on Merseyside after a gruelling week clocking up the Air Miles after a midweek Champions League round-trip to Azerbaijan. However, former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas jokingly pulled his blue beanie hat down to cover his face - in a look similar to Jennifer Lawrence's X-Men character Mystique.

Chelsea put in final preparations ahead of Liverpool clash

Chelsea have been putting the final touches to their preparation ahead of an eagerly anticipated trip to Anfield on Saturday. The Blues will come up against their rivals in hope of leaving Merseyside with three points and pulling themselves into contention at the top end of the table. A recently shaved Antonio Conte took charge of the session, taking his players through some last minute tactics on the eve of what is set to be a fiery clash.

Salah could have joined Liverpool in January 2014 but their refusal to bid more than £12m allowed Chelsea to beat them. Brendan Rodgers was furious, but it appeared his club had got off lightly.

If you are Chelsea and you go 2-0 down to Liverpool, you still know there will be nervousness around Anfield because of their defensive frailties this season.

DOMINIC KING: He won't speak. Before games or after games, it doesn't matter. Mohamed Salah is a man of few words with the media, preferring to keep his distance.

Antonio Conte is frustrated that Chelsea have failed to sort out the future of Thibaut Courtois with the Real Madrid target worryingly stalling on signing a new contract.

SIX things you missed from Ashes day three

Steve Smith scored 141 not out as Australia got their noses in front during day three of the Ashes in Brisbane.  Australia chased down England's 302 from the first innings and surpassed the total by 26 runs before Alastair Cook and James Vince fell early after the changeover. But amid such a pulsating day of cricket at the Gabba, you would have been forgiven for not catching some of the finer details from the action. Fortunately Sportsmail have provided a handy list of the things you may have missed.

James Anderson injury scare adds to England concerns

PAUL NEWMAN IN BRISBANE: It was bad enough for England to lose Alastair Cook and James Vince towards the end of the third day of this compelling opening Test but there were perhaps even greater implications for them in the condition of two other pivotal players.

GLEN WILLIAMS watched the drama on day three while our top team of PAUL NEWMAN, MARTIN SAMUEL, OLIVER HOLT and LAWRENCE BOOTH were close to the action.

Stuart Broad believes England's fate remains in their own hands after a chastening third day of the opening Ashes Test and also played down fitness concerns surrounding James Anderson.

West Ham 1-1 Leicester: Kouyate cancels Albrighton opener

WEST HAM 1-1 LEICESTER - IAN LADYMAN AT THE LONDON STADIUM: Strange as it sounds, the most important thing here was for West Ham not to lose. They may have been at home for David Moyes' second game in charge but given the atmosphere around the place this season, that is not necessarily an advantage. So from that point of view, the Moyes regime is up and running. He has his first point, his first goal and his team were able to leave the field at the London Stadium with no verbal assault to the ear drums.

West Ham launch Premier League's Rainbow Laces campaign

The London Stadium was lit up in all the colours of the rainbow on Saturday night as the Premier League launched their Rainbow Laces campaign this weekend. Friday night's 1-1 draw between West Ham and Leicester saw the launch of the now annual Stonewall-backed initiative.

ADAM CRAFTON AT THE LONDON STADIUM: For some West Ham fans, his arrival was seen as a curse rather than a blessing, and some hostility was not altogether surprising.

David Moyes praised the club’s home support for standing by his team and compared the atmosphere at the London Stadium last night to nostalgic memories of Upton Park.

Tony Pulis is the leading contender to take over at Swansea City if the board lose patience with manager Paul Clement.

Manchester City's former kitman Chappy reveals secrets

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW - CRAIG HOPE: When media shy Mario Balotelli agreed to an interview last year, the staff at Nice could not believe the warmth with which he greeted the man who would be asking the questions. 'It's Chappy!' he announced as he was reunited with the ageing interviewer in the south of France. Chappy is Les Chapman, the former Manchester City kit man of 17 years. We find him amid the charcoal skies and howling winds of Saddleworth Moor, where a dense fog and swirling rain have blurred the view of the burnt-out mill which teeters behind his sandstone house. The Côte d'Azur it is not. 'Before matches, the likes of Balotelli and the Brazilians would show me a trick in the dressing-room,' starts Chapman. 'The lads would gather around and, if I could repeat it, they'd give me 50 quid!'

Brighton winger Solly March says Brighton with 'no fear'

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW - KIERAN GILL: It is 34 years since Brighton contested a League fixture at Manchester United, a 1-1 draw in March 1983. Two months later, United beat Brighton 4-0 in the FA Cup final replay. Times have changed, but Chris Hughton's current side travel to Old Trafford on Saturday in buoyant mood. According to Brighton winger Solly March, the reason they have risen to ninth in the Premier League in their first season back in the top flight is simple. They have no fear. The opportunity to play at an 'iconic' stadium like Old Trafford is one to seize.

Pep Guardiola has challenged Raheem Sterling to smash his goalscoring record - and then better it next season. Sterling scored his 11th goal of the season against Feyenoord on Tuesday.

Eric Cantona says he would like to see Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola in charge at Old Trafford and cannot understand why the job was given to 'defensive' Jose Mourinho.

The Belgian midfielder rejected United's first contract offer in September as he seeks a new deal worth in the region of £170,000-a-week, and could walk away as a free agent.

Samoa completed preparations for their showdown with England by rehearsing their famous Siva Tau war dance at an empty Twickenham on Friday. The squad looked focus as they perfected their pre-match ritual and attempted to put their recent woes behind them. The Pacific Islanders are aiming to secure their first win of 2017 and go up against Eddie Jones' side having lost all six of their matches this year.

Chris Robshaw has stayed on the rollercoaster and is enjoying the ride, more than ever. He clung on during the big dip two years ago and today he will savour the view from the top again.

Well done Eddie for mixing things up and giving us plenty of new England starters to enjoy.. But I’m intrigued by the matchday dynamic of who captains the side.

Warren Gatland and Steve Hansen will not actually trade blows tonight when Wales face the All Blacks, but after they shared the pot in this year’s Lions series, many see this as a decider.

The Swedish forward waved to fans as he and his club team mates arrived at the Lowry Hotel in central Manchester ahead of their Premier League clash with Brighton and Hove Albion.  Ibrahimovic made his first appearance of the season last weekend as a substitute against Newcastle United, and again came off the bench in midweek in Basel.

David Haye posts photo of his nasty-looking arm injuries

David Haye has posted a photo displaying the nasty-looking injuries he suffered in the freak accident that caused the 37-year-old to pull out of his rematch with Tony Bellew earlier this week. He suffered the freak arm injury while tripping on stairs, damaging his bicep while grabbing a bannister to save himself.

The 29-year-old is out of contract at the Emirates Stadium at the end of the season and is free to speak to foreign clubs in January over a summer move.

Problems continue to mount for Formula One’s new owners

JONATHAN MCEVOY IN ABU DHABI: Chase Carey says Formula One must not be a soap opera. That’s a bit like saying EastEnders shouldn’t be. Or that 42nd Street isn’t a musical. Sadly, as the sport goes into the closing race of the 2017 season in Abu Dhabi, problems are mounting for Carey, chief executive of F1’s new owners, Formula One Group — and the figures are alarming.

George Russell: The Brit aiming to be F1's next big thing

Waiters carried trays of chocolate lollipops to assuage the heat in the desert paddock. But the teenager hoping to be the Next Big Thing in British motor racing would not be tempted by all the ice cream under the sun. At 6ft 2in, George Russell is the man Willy Wonka can forget. Among the jockeys of grand prix racing — Lewis Hamilton is 5ft 7in — he stands out for his stringiness. Russell weighs just 10st 4lb, and it requires a diet of the virtuous to keep his Formula One dream in shape. The 19-year-old from Norfolk is on course to bolster British ranks, which are likely to have an unprecedented low of only one representative on the grid next season. To that end, Russell will take part in practice in Abu Dhabi.

Raikkonen can still climb to fourth but is seven points behind Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo and trails Sebastian Vettel by a further 100 points, who is second to Lewis Hamilton.

Farah made the three-strong shortlist on the back of a farewell track season that saw him win a 10th straight global title with gold in the 10,000m at the World Championships.

Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope on his meteoric rise

Nick Pope did not think he would be here. He did not think he would be preparing for a Premier League game against Arsenal, did not even think that he would become a professional footballer at all. However the day the Burnley goalkeeper was released from the Ipswich academy as a 16-year-old was, in hindsight, the day his journey to the top actually began, and if the 25-year-old’s winding road to the Premier League proves anything, it is that there is life, and opportunities, outside the system.

With the smallest of margins proving pivotal in Formula One, Dan Marshall needs no reminding of the importance of his role at Force India HQ.

Man City boss Pep Guardiola shows off skills in training

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola got involved in first-team training on Friday as his side prepare for their Premier League showdown with Huddersfield. Guardiola showed no fear with mixing it with his stars and showed off at the beginning of their session by passing and volleying the ball to Bernardo Silva before taking his stand on the sidelines to cast a watchful eye over his players. The spirits in the City camp seemed to be high as they trained at the Etihad Campus and there's no surprise why, considering they are yet to taste defeat in a competitive fixture this season and sit top of the Premier League, eight points clear.

Oumar Niasse won a penalty for Everton during their 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace at the weekend after coming under a challenge from defender Dann, who clearly made contact.

The midfielder is out of contract next summer and despite impressive performances in the Europa League and Carabao Cup, he is yet to be handed a single start in the Premier League side.

The Belgian international, 30, claimed the boots had to be 'steamed and stretched' by the Manchester United kitman before he wore them. The High Court in London will examine the case.

Dundee 2-1 Rangers: Two-goal O'Hara piles misery on Gers

DUNDEE 2-1 RANGERS: On a freezing Friday in Dundee the strains of Bob Marley 'Everything's Gonna Be Alright' filled the cold air and, to a man, the Rangers support joined in. Their optimism contrasted sharply with the mood of the times. Hours earlier Derek McInnes had all but ruled himself out of the running to be the next manager. Within 45 minutes of the half-time sing-a-long the need for a new boss became pressing after a defeat to the team rooted to the foot of the Premiership at the beginning of the night.

His cameo at Brighton on Monday saw him set a new Premier League record for substitute appearances, with 143, but there is no sign of him winding down his top-flight career.

India take control against Sri Lanka as Ashwin shines

Ravichandran Ashwin and Ishant Sharma helped India dismiss Sri Lanka for 205 on the opening day of the second Test in Nagpur. It was the hosts' spinners, however, who made the major impact with Sri Lanka losing six wickets in the final session at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium.
