'No shots, no casualties' after panic at Oxford Circus

Police tonight released images of two men they believe started the Oxford Street stampede after a fight got out of hand. Witnesses said the two men 'bumped' into each other before 'several punches' were thrown at Oxford Circus tube station. Passengers then reported hearing 'shots' prompting police to storm the station and evacuate it. Minutes later, pop star Olly Murs tweeted he heard 'gun shots' inside department store Selfridges - half a mile from the tube station - and encouraged people to flee. Armed police triggered their protocol for terrorist attacks and descended on Britain's most famous shopping street on one of its busiest days of the year.

How could police get Gaia Pope investigation so wrong

A week ago today, the body of Gaia Pope (pictured), 19, was found by police in Swanage, Dorset. Gaia, who suffered from severe epilepsy, had been missing for 11 days. During that time, searches were conducted by land, sea and air. Six days into those searches, Dorset Police announced they had arrested two people on suspicion of murder - a woman, 71, and a man, 19. Days later, another man, 49, would be detained on the same grounds. All were members of the same family who had known Gaia for years. Here, we reconstruct the tragic chain of events in the hunt for Gaia, and ask if police were simply following procedure - or, as those arrested claim, just plain bungling

Sarah Vine on her hatred for Strictly Come Dancing

At the risk of adding fuel to the fire of those misguided few who accuse this fine newspaper of peddling hate, I have a terrible confession to make. An awful, shameful secret that I have been carrying inside me for years. A terrible, wicked, unforgivable prejudice for which I am truly, deeply sorry. But I can keep up the pretence no longer. I have to come clean. I hate Strictly Come Dancing. Actually, that's not true. I hate Strictly Come Dancing a lot. Really, a lot. It is, in my humble opinion, nothing more than inane, two-dimensional tripe which, like most things on TV these days, serves not so much as an example of the cultural dumbing-down of our society as evidence of a full-frontal lobotomy, writes SARAH VINE.

EU says it is ready for post-Brexit trade deal talks

The EU finally indicated it was ready to start talks on a post-Brexit trade deal this evening. After weeks of stalemate, the president of the European Council hinted at a breakthrough following talks with Theresa May (pictured left). New Billie Jean King film branded '90 per cent fiction'

They were carried into the arena on gilded sedans, like a Pharaoh and his queen, her feathered throne carried by four bare-chested men dressed as ancient slaves. To raucous whoops from men in the 50,000 crowd, he promised a decisive victory that would prove beyond doubt 'the fairer sex' was inferior and belonged 'in the bedroom and kitchen'. Cheered equally loudly by the female contingent, his female companion vowed to debunk this outdated hokum and presented him with a squealing piglet as a symbol of his appalling male chauvinism. So began one of the most bizarre sporting spectacles - the 'Battle of the Sexes' tennis showdown, in 1973, between five-time Wimbledon champion Billie Jean King, then 29 and in her prime, and a motor-mouthed misogynist named Bobby Riggs, who boasted that he could beat any woman, even at the age of 55. However, while it powerfully conveys Mrs King's historic struggle, the film's sub-plot - which describes her lesbian awakening with a beautiful Beverly Hills hairdresser, shortly before the match with Riggs took place - is dreamily romanticised.

What are the goodies in your posh advent calendar worth?

Gone are the days when an advent calendar was a piece of flimsy card with tiny windows that opened to reveal a picture of a snowman or a thumbnail-sized chocolate. Now, calendars are elaborately designed boxes stuffed with expensive beauty products, wine and even stationery. They are staggeringly big business and can cost tens or even hundreds of pounds. But just what are you getting for that rather substantial price? While some calendars boast contents worth far more than their cost, recently a 'lifestyle' advent calendar created by YouTube star Zoella came under fire from parents of her young fans, who claimed the contents weren't worth the hefty £50 tag. Some outlets have since reduced it to £25. So, if you want style and substance, which calendar should you buy? JENNY WOOD rounded up some of the most popular, peeked inside and worked out what the contents are really worth.
