Meghan Markle seen in 50 rare and candid photographs

These candid photos of the girl who would become Prince Harry's fiancee - from her elementary school days to her first wedding - were shared by her childhood friend, Ninaki Priddy. Among the rare images are: Meghan (left), aged five, at the end-of-year show at the private Little Red School House in Hollywood in 1986; right, with Ninaki at the Hotel Bellagio in Las Vegas during a road trip after her graduation in 2003; and, inset, in Chicago, also in 2003, on a night out with friends - posing with a man believed to be the maitre d' of a bar.

Meghan Markle revelations by the friend who knew her best

Ninaki Priddy (left, with Meghan after graduating high school in 1999) is torn between joy and a deep bewilderment when she remembers the blissfully happy day that her best friend, Meghan Markle, married her 'eternal love' six years ago. The actress was 30 years old and riding high on the success of the first series of the American TV drama Suits when she vowed to love and cherish film producer Trevor Engelson in front of more than 100 guests on a beach in Jamaica (right). Will William and Harry refuse to let Camilla be Queen?

Far from drawing closer to the Duchess of Cornwall (pictured above with Prince Charles) as they got older, William and Harry have moved farther away, writes Richard Kay. It was expected that the brothers (inset) would say something publicly about a stepmother to whom they had once been so welcoming when she turned 70 earlier this year. But they did not. 'They are not close to Camilla,' says a friend. 'The relationship has changed.' Courtiers now believe that should Charles wish to change Camilla's status when he becomes King and make her his Queen rather than 'Princess Consort', he will need the undiluted support of his sons. And they might withhold it after increasingly having carved themselves the role of custodians of the mother Diana's memory.

The chances are that if you're over the age of 40, you've already started to suffer from a common malady known as: 'But I had it just a minute ago!', writes memory expert HARRY LORAYNE.

Conservatives at war with police over Damian Green porn

Damian Green's(left) political career is in jeopardy after a retired detective claimed 'thousands' of pornographic images were found on his computer in Whitehall. An ex-detective, Neil Lewis, said he was acting to support former police chief Bob Quick, who was heavily criticised over a 2008 raid on Mr Green's Commons office and who first aired claims about pornography last month. A week after the porn controversy broke, Paul Stephenson, who was Met Commissioner between 2009 and 2011, became the second senior officer to confirm he had been briefed about the alleged discovery on Mr Green's computer in 2008, but said he 'regretted' it had gone into the public domain. Sue Gray, director of ethics and propriety at the Cabinet Office, has also quizzed Green over the allegations about pornography, which he denies. Pictured on the right, clockwise from top left: Bob Quick, Neil Lewis, Sir Paul Stephenson and Sue Gray.

Bear in mind that Mr Green has been in dispute with the police ever since they raided his Commons office when he was a shadow Home Office minister before the 2010 General Election.

Madonna sits on Louis Vuitton luggage on budget flight

Stunned passengers were left open-mouthed as they watched Madonna get off an economy flight - loaded with her Louis Vuitton luggage - after their plane was diverted on its way to Lisbon. The 59-year-old music legend, worth around £600 million, was flying from Heathrow with Air Portugal when the crew told passengers that the plane had to refuel in Porto instead yesterday. A spokesman for TAP said bad rain had caused delays and busy skies above Lisbon so - although TAP carries enough fuel - the flight had been diverted to Porto to be on the safe side. JAN MOIR joins the crowds as Meghan sparkled

A proud and beaming Prince Harry brought his fiancée Meghan Markle to the city on their first official engagement, which was to mark World Aids Day in Nottingham. After travelling up from London on the train, the couple(pictured) thrilled fans with a 30-minute walkabout, before they visited a charity fair and a local school. At Harry's side, she glowed in the pale winter sunshine, the perfect curve of her Hollywood teeth set in an easy smile, her lips glossed, her manner relaxed.

Meghan Markle happily bent down to pick up the glove and handed it back to its surprised owner, who thanked her during the walkabout with Prince Harry in Nottingham today.

A Twitter user has likened the royal romance that has captivated Britain to another love story that captured the hearts of the nation at Christmas time - that of Sam and Joanna from Love Actually.

Meghan's famously down to earth approach was praised by those who met her during her engagement in Nottingham today.

Letter shows Stan Laurel thought Charlie Chaplin was mean

In a letter (pictured right) written 60 years ago which has just come to light, Cumbrian-born Laurel (circled left) described Chaplin (circled centre and pictured right) as 'mean and cheap' with 'signs of insanity'. Laurel was his rival's understudy when they were music hall entertainers for the Fred Karno Company in 1910 and 1912. In a letter written in 1957, he said: 'I have to agree with you re Chaplin being mean and cheap, he never to my knowledge ever had any consideration [for] anybody - financially or otherwise, he never had any time for any of his close friends who worked with him in the early days. I was closely associated with Charlie for two or three years. I was his understudy and shared rooms with him on many occasions, so am fully aware of his idiosyncrasies.'

Trump could visit Britain in February despite spat with PM

Plans are being made for the US president to make a 'working visit' within months to open the new American embassy in London (pictured right under construction). It is thought to be conceived as a pared-back trip, rather than a red carpet occasion. The PM fuelled speculation yesterday that the idea of a full State Visit has been put on hold - despite an invitation being issued and accepted at the beginning of this year. However, the potential backlash Donald Trump (left turning on the Christmas lights in Washington) will face was laid bare last night when prisons minister Sam Gyimah said he was 'deeply uncomfortable' about the prospect of him coming to the UK.

Should you turn your Christmas tree upside down?

Whether you favour lights-only, single-colour decorations, or a no-tinsel policy, chances are your foliage doesn't look much different from the millions of others springing up in homes across Britain this weekend. But if you want to turn yuletide tradition on its head, you could start by flipping your tree upside down. Improbable as it may sound, topsy-turvy trees are all the rage for 2017. The curious practice dates back to 12th-century Central and Eastern Europe, when the inverted triangular shape was believed to signify the Holy Trinity. Devout people argue that the tip of the tree ought to point towards heaven, but the fashion has gradually taken hold and last year made its way to the UK, when London's Tate Britain gallery copied the style for its seasonal centrepiece (pictured inset right). Last week, Claridge's Hotel in London became the latest devotee when it unveiled a giant spruce suspended upside down in its foyer (pictured left inset) and decorated by Chanel fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, no less, with a glitzy array of baubles, lights and snowy, white-painted roots. Here, the Mail's Christmas fairy ALICE SMELLIE (pictured) grabs a string of twinkly lights and suspends her disbelief . . . along with her tree.

First World War photographs injected with colour

Among the striking pictures from the cataclysmic war is a fascinating shot capturing the moment German and British troops put down their weapons for the famous Christmas truce of 1914 (top left). There is also a beautifully coloured photograph of two women shovelling coal in a sugar factory in Scotland as warm light shines through stained-glass windows in the background (top right). Other incredible images show the Great War from the Austrian perspective, including artillerymen firing on top of Ortler mountain in the Alps (bottom left). Pictured bottom right: an American soldier displaying his trophies, including a German Iron Cross, pointed helmet and a pistol. The images were colourised by photographer Mario Unger. He said: 'I choose the images of war, because war doesn't look as terrible in black and white as it does in colour'.

The device, which was used with a keypad tethered to an ear piece, helped Wozniak and Jobs go on to produce the first ever Apple 1 computer in California four years later.

A 22-year-old man was arrested in Manaus, Brazil, after trying to run a woman, also 22, over with his vehicle following a gas station brawl on November 25, Brazilian police said.

Mac on... Donald Trump's state visit

'A tweet from the Queen, Sir. Outlining plans for your state visit. You fly to Stansted Airport, have a cup of tea and biscuit with her butler then fly home again.'

'You're going to be a big sister': Hilarious video shows dog doing a double take when her owner tells her the family are getting a new puppy

Footage from Labadie, Missouri, shows the owner breaking the news to the German Shepherd, called Artie, as she sits in the front seat of a car. 'Artie, I've got some good news,' she says. 'You're going to be a big sister.' At first, Artie does not appear to register what she is saying. 'We're getting a new puppy,' she continues. 'You're going to have a little brother.' Slowly, Artie turns to face her with a shocked expression, as the bombshell appears to sink in.

Basia Briggs is spilling the beans in a new book

A confidante of the Duchess of York, staple of Hello! magazine, and indefatigable fundraiser, her address book is a compendium of the wealthy and well-connected. But these days she'd rather be at home than mingling with the great and good over canapes and champagne. Tesla switches on the world's biggest battery in Australia

Just a week after completing construction of the world's largest lithium ion battery in Australia, Tesla has switched on its enormous device at the Hornsdale wind farm, near Jamestown. The 129-megawatt battery will be used to feed Australia's shaky power grid for the first day of summer, meeting a promise by Elon Musk (pictured inset) CEO of Tesla, to build it in 100 days or give it free. Tesla hopes the battery will be the first step to Australia becoming a renewable energy powerhouse.
