It's one of Australia's most iconic TV series running for more than three decades.

But loyal viewers are sure to be surprised by a range of on set secrets, such as why there is always 24/7 security guards and how come actors suck on ice cubes in between takes.

Stefan Dennis, who plays Neighbours 'villain' Paul Robinson, told news.com.au that scenes are filmed in unexpected locations, with Ramsay Street not where fans might expect.

During Melbourne's colder months, it is common for actors of the soap to suck ice cubes in between takes.

Sucking on ice cools down the actors' breath, and stops it from being visible in chilly temperatures. 

Pools are heated so soap stars won't shiver while shooting scenes in the water, Stefan also said.

'In the days when the Neighbours phenomenon was going absolutely berserk, busloads of tourists would come and they would souvenir anything they could,' he revealed.

'They would get a handful of dirt and stick it in their pocket or they’d pinch a number off a letterbox. And because they’re real houses, the owners were getting really upset.'

But fortunately for the real life home owners Neighbours isn't filmed on an actual street, with Ramsay Street a work of fiction.

The sets are all only a few metres deep with the interior sets housed in a different section of the studio. 

Stefan has appeared on Neighbours since its inception in 1985.

'I am now typecast as an actor which is not a bad thing because more often than not, I’m cast as the villain, and that’s great — I much prefer those roles than the good guy,' he told the Australian in 2015.
