John Mayer was rushed to a hospital in New Orleans for an emergency appendectomy on Tuesday.

The 40-year-old singer is still in surgery, his rep has told TMZ.

This has forced the Your Body Is A Wonderland crooner to postpone his show in NOLA with The Dead And Company.

It is not yet clear when he will be able to return to his tour.

The 'original tickets for Tuesday's show will be honored at the new date and if fans want a refund, they can return to point of purchase,' the site added.

This procedure is normally performed as an emergency procedure, when the patient is suffering from acute appendicitis.

Appendectomy may be performed laparoscopically (in minimally invasive surgery) or as an open operation. 

In June he told Rolling Stone he liked collaborating with The Dead And Company.

'I've never had inclusion before,' he said.

'I always created one-man clubs. And one-man shows are very hard to live inside of and inhabit for 50 years. 

'When I was invited into this tribe, I promise you it was the exact opposite of anything you might think along the lines of having to reconcile ego or status.

Mayer is best known for his Grammy winning music that includes the songs Gravity and Free Fallin'. But he has also had a notable dating life.

The Connecticut native has been linked to Jennifer Love Hewitt, Heidi Klum, Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Aniston and Katy Perry.

His last famous girlfriend was Perry, who he made a duet with. She has since dated actor Orlando Bloom, but they have already split.
