The Visitor (Reprise)
Im a Canadian by the way, and I love the USA, sings Neil Young, giving his riposte to Donald Trumps Make America Great Again mantra on Already Great. Young goes on to deliver his state-of-the-nation address, offering hope and humour on Forever and Stand Tall. He even explores Santana-like Latin rhythms on Carnival.

Under The Radar Volume 2 (RobbieWilliams.com)
This fans only album is available for £10 from Robbies website and deserves a wider hearing. A clutch of highly-polished demos and outtakes, it veers from brash rock to sensitive balladry. The surging power pop of Run It Wild is up with the best things hes done, and theres an energetic cover of Dolly Partons 9 To 5.

A Brand New Me (Rhino)
With concerns over her health after cancelled shows in the summer, this orchestral revamp is a timely reminder of Aretha Franklins soul genius. Like Elvis Presleys If I Can Dream compilation, it pairs her original vocals with fresh arrangements by The Royal Philharmonic. Its difficult to add to the brilliance of early hits like I Say A Little Prayer, but the renovations are a more natural fit on Seventies pop covers such as Let It Be.>★★★
The Way Is Read (Nonesuch)
Watford sibling trio The Staves are quietly building themselves a formidable reputation, and this collaboration with a New York classical sextet a union put together by Bon Ivers Justin Vernon is their most ambitious release yet. There are moments here when the blend of folk, jazz and classical is jarring. But the sisters are superb singers and songs like Appetite are folk-pop pearls worthy of Laurel Canyon.>★★★
The Rest Of Our Life (Sony)
Country musics first couple preview next years UK tour with this innocuous duets set. The album is Hills first in nine years and it feels good to have her back on the superior ballad Speak To A Girl. The duo strive for pop credibility on the Ed Sheeran-penned title track, but generally play safe. Theres a touch of the Smug Marrieds to The Bed We Made. Cowboy Lullaby speaks only to hardcore country fans.>★★
Soul Of A Woman (Daptone)
A poignant farewell from the New York soul singer, who died last year of cancer. Backed by The Dap-Kings, Jones envisaged an album of slow songs, but widened the palate as her health faded. These Tears and When I Saw Your Face are ballads rooted in Philly soul, but theres also plenty of brassy funk and blues.
