'My jeans were loose!' Diane Kruger reveals she got so depressed while filming In The Fade she lost seven pounds and started smoking again

Diane Kruger said she was so thoroughly immersed in the grief of her In the Fade character - she lost sleep, seven pounds, and started smoking again.

'My jeans were loose!' the German 41-year-old (who smoked in the nineties when she was an Elite Model) confessed at SAG-AFTRA Foundation Conversations on Monday.

'I felt like I was drowning the whole time. I felt like I was drowning in grief, drowning in the gray weather, and drowning in the story. I picked up smoking. I couldn't sleep...It changed my life forever.'

The SAG Award winner prepared to play Katja Sekerci - a woman whose Kurdish husband and five-year-old son are killed in a neo-Nazis terrorist attack - by attending self-help groups in New York and Germany.

'Quickly, I realized the best way to research was to listen,' explained Kruger (born Heidkrüger), whose stepfather passed away during production.

'I breathed this movie. I breathed the victims' suffering. I tried to be as truthful as I could.'
