It's said to be the most wonderful time of the year.

But Christmas will spell nothing but trouble for Coronation Street's Adam Barlow as the embattled character attempts to take his own life in dark, upcoming scenes. 

It seems the festive period will tip the solicitor over the edge after he learns that vicar Billy Mayhew was behind the car crash that killed his mother Susan and put him in hospital.

Unable to cope with his heartache, it looks as though Adam, who is played by actor Sam Robertson, will reach for the bottle and attempt to overdose on painkillers. 

Images show Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard) return home to find Adam semi conscious on the floor. 

Desperate to save his nephew, Daniel tries to call an ambulance, though Adam begs him not to.

Meanwhile, Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) seems determined to take revenge on Billy (Daniel Brocklebank) as new stills show him tied up in the boot of his car. 

Peter then drives the disgraced vicar to a wasteland, where a frightened Billy begins to pray. 

Keen to extract revenge, Peter is later seen reversing his car up to the edge of a cliff, before opening the boot.

Already fearing for his life, Billy then looks out to see his mere inches from an almighty drop. 

Taunting him once more, Peter tells him that he's going to let the car roll backward off the cliff - before reminding him that his death will at least be quicker than Susan's.
