Keith Chegwin dies aged 60 following lung condition

Keith Chegwin (left in Get it Together) has died today aged 60 after battling a 'long-term battle with a progressive lung condition'. The star (right in 2016) died in a hospice at around midnight last night surrounded by his wife Maria and two children Rose and Ted. 'Cheggers' became a household name presenting Swap Shop and Cheggers Plays Pop in the 1970s followed by Saturday Superstore in the 1980s. Most recently he appeared in Ricky Gervais' sitcom Life's Too Short and in Celebrity Big Brother in 2015, but had been seriously ill for around six months and required an oxygen tank to breathe. His last tweet was in September and told his fans: 'Still not right. I will be back - But not for a bit yet. I'm so sorry'. In a statement, the entertainer's family said: 'We are heartbroken to share the news that Keith Chegwin sadly passed away following a long-term battle with a progressive lung condition, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, which rapidly worsened towards the end of this year'. Mr Chegwin was previously married to Tomorrow's World presenter Maggie Philbin (together bottom right with daughter Rose). She said in a statement on her website: 'Keith was a one-off - full of life, generous and with a focus on things that mattered - his family. I saw him two months ago at his sister Janice's wedding, where he was still attempting to be life and soul of the party despite being on portable' oxygen.

UK Weather: Black Monday sees snow turn into deadly ice

Britain is bracing for its coldest night in nearly seven years as temperatures fall to -15C (5F) tonight after a chaotic 'Black Monday' saw more snow and treacherous ice causing travel chaos. Much of the country has been paralysed in the last 30 hours following the first serious snowfall of winter - with more than 2,000 schools closed and at least 4,500 homes remaining without power today. And the Trades Union Congress told employers not to force staff to make hazardous journeys into work, saying firms should give staff advice on what to do when snow, ice and a lack of public transport stops them getting in. Pictured: Snowy conditions in Danbury, Essex (top left), cars edge through floodwaters on the A20 in Aylesford, Kent (bottom left), people make their way through snow and sleet on Westminster Bridge in London (top right), a boy slides on an inflatable tube at Bradgate Park in Leicestershire (bottom right), and a 'closed' sign hangs on the gate of Cobden Primary School in Loughborough, Leicestershire, after snowfall (centre).

Parents' fury as thousands of schools are closed over snow

In Wales (pictured today) around 500 schools are closed, 400 will not open today in Birmingham and approximately 300 are shut in both Staffordshire and Gloucestershire. Critics branded the closures 'ridiculous' and said headteachers were 'too quick' to close their doors to pupils in bad weather. Many parents have expressed their disbelief because their local schools have been closed because of snow - even though they haven't got any. Howard Webster wrote: 'I can't ever remember a time when my school was closed because of the weather: We're breeding a generation of wimps governed by a generation scared s***less by health and safety legislation'. Frank Crisp tweeted: 'Staggered to see local schools closed because of snow just seen the woman across the road who is in her 80s walking back from the paper shop and kids can't even walk to school'.

UK Weather: Twitter sees funny side of Black Ice Monday

Much of the country has been paralysed in the past 24 hours following the first serious snowfall of winter - and today more than 2,000 schools are closed and at least 4,500 homes remain without power. Cars have been abandoned and motorists left stranded as some suffered crashes on the roads - while thousands spent the night at Heathrow, Birmingham, Stansted and Luton airports after flights were delayed or cancelled. Some 50,000 British Airways passengers are said to be stranded - 30,000 in the UK and 20,000 in Europe after a cold night which saw temperatures fall to -12.2C (10F) in the aptly-named Chillingham Barns, Northumberland. But people were quick to see the funny side and social media was full of memes and jokes about the UK as it struggled to deal with the adverse weather conditions, using the hashtags #SnowWatch and #BlackIceMonday.

PM meets Cabinet amid fight to hold EU divorce deal

The PM faced a grilling in the Commons on why she had agreed to hand over up to £39billion to Brussels when the country was still going through austerity. Conservative backbencher Philip Davies told Mrs May: 'She said there had been give and take in this negotiation and she is absolutely right - we are giving the EU tens of billions of pounds and they are taking it.' The PM insisted the government was taking 'responsibility' and insisted the taxpayer would soon see 'significant savings' that could be pumped into key public services. She also made clear the payment would be 'off the table' if a trade agreement with the EU was not reached. The clashes came as Mrs May was forced to move to appease anger in Dublin after David Davis played down the effect of the painstakingly-assembled deal and suggested it would not be 'legally enforceable'. The Brexit Secretary was embarrassingly sent out this morning to correct his comments - promising that Britain would stand by the arrangements and they were 'more than legally enforceable'.

Despite previously warning that the talks could be the 'most complicated of all time', the Brexit Secretary said he only needed to be 'calm' rather than intelligent.
