Besides a kidult's toybox, this is probably the only film place you'll find Chucky, King Kong and the DeLorean sharing space.

The new trailer for Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One was unveiled on Sunday, and is packed with four decades of pop culture.

Opening in Columbus, Ohio in the year 2045, the clip introduces young protagonist Wade Watts, played by Tye Sheridan.

'My dad picked that name because it sounded like a superheroes alter-ego, like Peter Parker or Bruce Banner. But he died when I was a kid. My mom too,' he explains

'And I ended up here. Sitting here in my tiny corner of nowhere. There's nowhere left to go. Nowhere... except the Oasis.'

The Oasis, he explains, is a 'whole virtual universe', populated by gamers and legendary game characters alike.

'People come to the Oasis for all the things they can do, but they stay because of all the things they can be,' he says 'It's the only place where it feels like I mean anything.'

He explains that the Oasis was the brainchild of the now deceased James Halliday (Mark Rylance), who reveals in a posthumous recording that he stashed a prize somewhere in the MMO game.

'I created a hidden object; an Easter Egg,' he reveals. 'The first person to find the egg will inherit half a trillion dollars and total control of the Oasis itself.'

This pricks the ears of Wade — and everyone else in the world — who immediately begin the search.

But when he starts making progress, Wade's Oasis avatar — named Parzival — soon attracts the attention of the sinister corporate giant Innovative Online Industries (IOI), who begin to hunt him down inside and outside of the Oasis.

'The Oasis, the world's most important economic resource,' one character says. 'This is nothing less than a war for control of the future.'

There's dozens of familiar characters milling about in the background, including Ryu, Blanka and Chun Li from Street Fighter, DC's Joker and Harley Quinn, Chucky, Freddie Kruger, King Kong, the Iron Giant and even a Gundam.

The retro soundtrack is equally nostalgic, featuring Depeche Mode's World In My Eyes and Van Halen's Jump.

'Like many of you, I only came here to escape... but I found something much bigger than just myself... are you willing to fight?' Parzival tells his followers before an epic-looking battle. 'Help us save the Oasis.'

Ready Player One hits theatres on March 30.
