'I am utterly terrified': Jane Fonda admits she never thought she would still be fighting for women's rights as she approaches the age of 80

She's shown no signs of slowing down in her political activism.

And as Jane Fonda prepares to turn 80, she herself has admitted that even she thought she would have 'taken up gardening' rather than going 'back to the barricades'.

The veteran actress, who has spent more than five decades campaigning for various causes, said she is 'utterly terrified' to think that 'our freedoms, our democracy would be in jeopardy the way they are now'.

The two-time Oscar winner told Vanity Fair: 'I thought that we would have a woman president [by my 80th birthday].'

She added: 'I thought that I could maybe take up gardening.

'I didn't think that I would be back on the barricades, no.

As well as championing women's rights, the three times married and divorced actress has been an anti-war activist since the Vietnam conflict in the 1960s and 70s, leading to the nickname 'Hanoi Jane'.

Miss Fonda, who is 80 on December 21, celebrated her birthday on Saturday evening with an intimate fundraiser for the actress's health charity - Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Power & Potential.

Jane had already been the recipient of the Ramona Ripston Liberty, Justice & Equality Award at the American Civil Liberties Union event at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on Sunday evening.
