Darkest Hour stars Gary as British wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill who showcased a jaw-dropping transformation to play the revered Briton.
Oldman is joined in the historical drama by a stellar cast that includes Kristin as Clementine Churchill, Stephen Dillane as Viscount Halifax, the foreign secretary and Lily James as Churchill's personal secretary Elizabeth Nel.
The Joe Wright directed feature tells the story of how the British establishment reluctantly invited Churchill to replace Neville Chamberlain after he was weakened politically by the ongoing aggression of Adolf Hitler and the failure of his Munich Agreement.
Inspiration: Gary also shook hands with Randolph Spencer-Churchill on the carpet - who is the grandson of the famous politician
Dream team! Director Joe Wright (far left) later joined his cast on the carpet - posing with Kristin, Gary, Lily and Samuel West, who portrays Antony Eden (L-R)
Back in time: The feature tells the story of how the British establishment reluctantly invited Churchill (Oldman) to replace Neville Chamberlain after he was weakened politically by the ongoing aggression of Adolf Hitler
On the day Churchill took office, Germany invaded Belgium, the Netherlands and France and shortly thereafter the British Expeditionary Force was backed into a corner on the beaches of Dunkirk.
With his foreign secretary Lord Halifax and his generals warning of catastrophe and urging him to seek peace talks with Hitler, Churchill gives a rousing and impassioned speech to the House Of Commons, committing Britain to ongoing war with Germany and saying Britain will never surrender.
The movie opens with Chamberlain explaining: 'It is now time to pick my successor and there is only one man that the opposition will accept.'
There is then a riposte from one of his cabinet when it's clear that that 'one man' is Churchill: 'He stands for one thing and on thing only - himself.'
Despite receiving a Golden Globe nod for the role, Gary recently admitted he found it difficult playing such an iconic character in British history.
Staying strong: With many urging him to seek peace talks with Hitler, Churchill (played by Gary, above) gives a rousing and impassioned speech to the House Of Commons, stating Britain will never surrender
Unrecognisable: Despite receiving a Golden Globe nod for the role, Gary (R) recently admitted he found it difficult playing such an iconic character in British history (L) - which required him to wear extensive facial prosthetics
Dedicated: Detailing the huge amount of research the role required (above), Gary said: 'I had almost a year really to work on it. I surrendered the year up to Churchill. My wife would say, 'I've gone to bed with Winston Churchill but I'd wake up with Gary'
Hero: Yet, his dedication to the role paid off - as co-star Kristin, who plays Churchill's wife Clementine (R), was quick to sing his praises to Variety, and even admitted she often forgot she was working with Gary on set, and not the politican himself
Discussing the challenge of re-creating such a famous and inspirational man, he told Gold Derby last month: 'There were days when I thought I could do it and there were days when I thought, 'Heavens what have I let myself in for?' There were moments of doubt along the way.'
However, he eventually found the perfect balance of historical accuracy and unique characterisation after a year of work on the role - which he admitted took over his whole life.
He added: 'I had almost a year really to work on it. I surrendered the year up to Churchill. In fact, my wife would say, 'I've gone to bed with Winston Churchill but I'd wake up with Gary.''
Yet, it seems his dedication to the role paid off - as co-star Kristin was quick to sing his praises to Variety, and even admitted she often forgot she was working with Gary on set, and not the politician himself.
She said: 'I long to work with him again. He's the most amazing, generous actor. For a start, you don't really know you're working with Gary Oldman. It was Winston Churchill opposite me.'
Darkest Hour will open in the UK on January 12, making it a contender for the Academy Awards.
New chapter: Anthony McCarten also attended the premiere - having written the book of the film's events, titled Darkest Hour - How Churchill Brought England Back from the Brink
Red hot! Presenter Sonali Shah (L) was chic in a bright red coat and black heeled boots, while actress Meredith Ostrom (R) put on a leggy display in a white mini dress, layered beneath a cropped jacket of matching red hue
Taking the plunge: Michelle Dewberry also commanded attention in a daring black jumpsuit - complete with embellished bodice and daring V neckline
