- The secretary of state, John Merrill, was on CNN and said Moore could have a recount - if he paid for it
- 'The people of Alabama have spoken tonight,' Merrill said. 'They've made their voices heard loud and clear'
Alabama's Secretary of State John Merrill said Republican Senate loser Roy Moore could get a recount of the election – if he paid for it.
'The people of Alabama have spoken tonight. They’ve made their voice heard loud and clear,' Merrill said on CNN.
Moore outdid even Democrat Doug Jones – who shocked the political world by winning – by dramatically coming onstage at his election night party and pronouncing the race not over.
Senate candidate Roy Moore refused to concede Tuesday night, urging journalists to ask Alabama's secretary of state about a recount. On CNN, the secretary of state said the people of Alabama 'made their voice heard loud and clear'
'I really want to thank you for coming tonight and realize when the vote is this close it is not over,' Moore said.
He urged journalists in the room to check in with the state's secretary of state about a recount provision, suggesting the race was close enough to trigger a second look.
At last counting, Jones had bested Moore by 20,000 votes or 1.5 per cent.
'But we know that God is always in control,' Moore also said. 'Part of the problem with this campaign is that we've been painted in unfavorable and unfaithful light. We've been put in a hole.'
The right-wing Christian, who has been accused of preying on teenage girls, then quoted from scripture – a passage about patience – and sent his flock home.
'And that's what we've got to do, is wait on God and let this process play out,' Moore said. 'I know it's late, we can't wait and let everybody wait 'til 10, 11 o'clock, but these votes are still coming in and we're looking at that.'
Major news networks showed that 100 per cent of precincts are reporting.
'Let's go home and sleep on it,' Moore urged.
