It's a sign of the times when people are more upset over jokes about alleged pedophiles, than they are over the alleged pedophile themselves.

Harry Styles stepped in as replacement host of The Late late Show for James Corden on Tuesday night, and not all of his jokes went down too well.

The singer agreed to the job with just two-and-a-half hours notice, after Corden's wife Julia gave birth to their third child.

On the same day, Republican Senate hopeful Roy Moore suffered a historic loss to Democrat Doug Jones in the typically red state of Alabama, meaning monologue gags were inevitable.

'If you're anything like me, the only thing that you and your friends are talking about at the moment is the Alabama senate race,' he said, giggling.

The jokes started light, making fun of Moore riding his horse to the polling booth.

'I don't know too much about hoofed animals... but I'm pretty sure that's an ass,' Harry joked.

But the next zinger was a bit too close to the bone for some fans.

'Many of you would think that I am unfamiliar with Roy Moore, being a Brit; that is not true. I am very familiar with Roy Moore. I've had to throw him out of more than a dozen of my concerts.'

The audience thought it was hilarious; but some people on Twitter didn't.

'A joke about a child rapist is not dry humor. It’s sick,' one Twitter user wrote. 'You think that just because he’s Harry Styles he gets a pass well sis he doesn’t. You can keep screaming at a wall but the rest of us will hold him accountable.'

'@latelateshow @Harry_Styles I don’t expect an applogy, but we all know how distasteful that joke was. All parties involved should have known better than to go forward with it, let alone write it or read it out loud,' posted a third.
