'Looks like Steven has a future in selfies': Spielberg takes star-packed snap with Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep at The Post premiere (but it's not his best camera work)

He is one of the most skilled filmmakers to ever get behind a camera.

But even Steven Spielberg's selfie game could do with a bit of work, if his effort at The Post premiere in Washington, DC, on Thursday night was anything to judge by.

The legendary director, 70, tried putting himself in front of the lens, using Rita Wilson's phone to snap a star-packed group shot.

While his framing was a little off, he did manage to cram in 41 Oscar nominations worth of stars, including Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep.

Tom's wife Rita and Steven's wife Kate Capshaw were also in there, while Better Call Saul's Bob Odenkirk rounded out the sextet.

Despite being one of the greatest directors of all time, the auteur chose some pretty shoddy lighting for the scene, not to mention cutting off half of Meryl's face.

'Looks like Steven has a future in selfies,' Wilson declared after tagging - or at least hastagging - all the participants.

The selfie was somewhat reminiscent of the famed 'Oscars selfie' snapped in the middle of the 2014 Academy Awards.

Host Ellen DeGeneres waded into the crowd and grabbed some of the world's biggest stars - including Bradley Cooper, Meryl Streep, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Lawrence - to squeeze in.

The high-profile film follows The Washington Post's race to secure and publish the classified Pentagon Papers in 1971, which exposed a government cover-up spanning decades.

It has been nominated for numerous Golden Globes, including individual acting awards for Meryl, Tom, and Steven.

However, it appeared to be snubbed by the SAG Awards and didn't feature in its list of nominations at all.

The Post is scheduled for release on January 12, 2018.
