In the case of two celebrities, it was literally a fall into the unknown as footballer Dennis Wise and comedienne Shappi Khorsandi did the dreaded skydive into the remote jungle - to hilarious and shocking results.
The ten celebrities competed in several different challenges in a bid to win meal tickets, and avoid the dreaded rice and bean basic rations.

He can fly! Footballer Dennis Wise made a spectacular leap into the jungle during the I'm A Celebrity launch on Sunday as he skydived into the Australian wilderness
After the celebrities were paired up in 'buddies' to compete in tasks to earn the meal tickets, Dennis and Shappi were told they would make the jump to set off a coloured flare.
The flare they needed to set off would be chosen by their co-stars Rebekah Vardy and Stanley Johnson, who would radio the duo with the details after they completed a separate task.
If they set off the correct flare they would win a meal ticket for camp each.
As Dennis and Shappi got ready for the dreaded leap the comedienne said:'Jumping out of an aeroplane and falling has throughout my life been my worst nightmare. It's been my recurring nightmare. That and being eaten by lions.'
Incredible: Comedian Shappi Khorsandi also made a skydive into the jungle in a bid to earn a meal ticket for camp
'Loved it': Dennis seemed to love doing the skydive
Amazing: The former England star was stunned by the incredible views as he touched down in a lake
Near-perfect: Shappi landed in a lake after her amazing jump, saying she did not open her eyes at all during the jump
Dennis also confessed: 'I've never done sky diving before. Never been brave enough to do it but I haven't got a choice now.'
As they clambered into their gear, Shappi said: 'I don't think it's an irrational fear. I'm putting my life in the hands of a man I met five minutes ago.'
Dennis was first to jump, and despite the terrifying ordeal the former England star seemed to love his jump, saying after landing in the water: 'That's amazing what I've just done there. Never done it before. Loved it.'
The right one? Shappi then set off a coloured flare that she though was correct in a bid to earn a meal ticket
Elated: Dennis set off a purple flare after being radioed to do so by his jungle 'buddy' Becky Vardy
After swimming to shore and setting off the purple flare as instructed by his buddy Becky, he said: 'I hope we've both done enough to get the meal ticket tonight.'
Shappi was next to jump - in a clear state of terror, as she expressed her love for her two children and repeatedly chanted: 'I have no fear' ahead of her jump.
Plunging out of the helicopter, the comedienne let out an ear-piercing scream - before shrieking: 'I can't open my eyes but I'm sure it's beautiful.'
After the jump she explained: 'My biggest fear is heights. If I'm flying a kite, I can't look up at the kite,' as she set off the green flare as instructed by Stanley.
No brolly? Hosts Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly then joined the celebrities after their challenge in the (very wet) jungle to reveal the results
Success? Dennis and Becky (right) set off the correct flare and earned a meal ticket
Sorry! Unfortunately Stanley and Shappi failed to earn a meal ticket, but the duo seemed to be in good spirits about it
As the dynamic duos were reunited hosts Ant and Dec arrived to reveal the challenge results.
Dennis and Becky correctly let off the purple flare. But Shappi and Stanley were incorrect to release the green. 'It doesn't matter. I'm not hungry anyway' said Shappi.
Earlier on in Sunday's spectacular launch show, the celebrities met up for the first time, rocking their finest looks in a stylish champagne reception.
Meet and greet: Earlier in Sunday's show, the celebrities met for the first time in a Gold Coast villa for glamorous champagne reception

Politician Stanley Johnson, WAG Becky Vardy, singer Vanessa White, Made in Chelsea Georgia 'Toff' Toffolo and actor Jamie Lomas all met at a luxury villa on the Gold Coast, with Ant & Dec soon joining them on a glamorous speedboat.
Dec said 'Your journey to the Jungle is about to begin and this year you'll each be making your way to camp with a celebrity buddy.'
Ant continued 'The public have decided who each of you will be buddied up with.'
Dynamic duo: Shappi and Stanley were one of the first pairs to be revealed
Feisty: Becky and Dennies were then revealed to be 'jungle buddies'
The remaining celebrities then arrived one-by-one to meet their partners, with the first arrival being Coronation Street star Jennie McAlpine.
Ant revealed that the public had been voting to give her a celebrity buddy and that it was Jamie Lomas. Jamie was thirlled by the news and embraced his new partner.
The next celebrity to arrive was Youtuber Jack Maynard, Dec revealed his celebrity buddy was Toff.
The third celebrity to arrive was comedian Shappi Khorsandi and Ant revealed her celebrity buddy was Stanley Johnson.
Already buddies: As the new pairs sat to down for their final feast, actor Jamie Lomas revealed he was already pals with his jungle buddy Jennie McAlpine, who stars in Coronation Street
Nightclub pals: Made in Chelsea star Georgia 'Toff' Toffolo met her buddy Jack Maynard on a night out before they headed Down Under
Ant asked Stanley if he was happy, Stanley turned to Shappi and said 'I'm a happy chappy Shappi.'
Next up was former footballer Dennis Wise who Dec revealed was paired with Becky.
Ant then introduced the last celebrity who was boxer Amir Khan and asked him if he was excited to be there.
First encounters: Singer Vanessa White was paired up with boxer Amir Khan
'I am excited, to be honest I've never watched the show', to which Dec playfully responded: 'Well to be honest, I've never seen you box!'
Ant revealed that Vanessa was Amir's celebrity buddy, and then gave the new pairs a teaser on what to expect in their first days in the jungle.
The hosting duo then went onto explain to the celebrities that they would compete in challenges to earn meal tickets in a bid to avoid living on basic rations of rice and beans.
Star-studded: Dennis Wise, Shappi Khorsandi, Amir Khan, Jennie McAlpine and Jack Maynard await their arrival in the jungle
Before their jungle journey began, the pairs were able to sit down and enjoy a final First Dates-style feast together.
Jamie presented Jennie with a table flower as a gift for his new buddy. 'I'm made up me and Jennie are buddies, I know Jennie from back home, we'll have a good laugh together.' said Jamie.
Shappi asked Stanley what food he'd miss most in the Jungle and he replied 'Wine and cheese'.
It's about to get a lot less glamorous! Jamie Lomas, Georgia Toffolo, Rebekah Vardy, Vanessa White and Stanley Johnson prepare to head into the Australian wild
'Stanley and I are such polar opposites we can only get on, he's the cheese to my onion, the salt to my vinegar' said Shappi.
Jack revealed that he and partner Toff had previously met on a night out, saying: 'It was good to come here and see a familiar face, I can't remember when I met you but I guess I was drunk.'
'I can't pinpoint exactly which nightclub it was but I know it happened' smiled Toff.
Toff said 'If I could have picked my partner I would have chosen Jack, he's young and nimble so if we're gonna get those meal tickets he's my man.'
Big test: Jamie, Jenny, Toff, Jack, Vanessa and Amir were then taken to the top of a Gold Coast building to complete the dreaded plank task
Oh no! The stars looked terrified at the challenge ahead in a bid to win a meal ticket
A bit wobbly: Jamie and Jennie were up first, and despite a few hiccups managed to earn a meal ticket
It was then that the celebrities were factioned off to compete in various challenges to earn their meal tickets.
Amir, Vanessa, Jack, Jennie, Jamie and Toff were flown to the top of a Gold Coast building for the return of the Walk the Plank task.
The buddies would walk two planks together and press a button when the light turned green to win their meal tickets.
Success: Jennie seemed totally focused during the challenge
Tense: Hosts Ant and Dec were equally involved as they watched the challenge go down
First up to walk the plank together was Jennie and Jamie, and despite a few wobbles the duo managed to make it to the end of planks and press the buttons at the same time.
Next up was Jack and Toff, and while the blonde beauty moved quite quickly to the end of the plank, Jack froze halfway.
'Come on darling, I'm waiting for you, come to the yellow box, it's lovely when you're here' Toff said encouragingly.
Eventually the duo both made it to the end and earned their meal ticket.
Amir and Vanessa were the final celebrities to walk the plank, and oth were successful in earning their meal ticket.
'That was the scariest thing I've ever done in my life, I didn't think I'd make it back' said Vanessa, while Amir noted it was worst than going into a boxing match.
Dramatic: The celebrities seemed terrified ahead of their first challenge of the series
Focused: Toff seemed less fazed by the task at hand, speedily making it to the end of the plank
Nervous: Amir revealed he found the challenge tougher than a boxing match
We got there! Vanessa was also successful, earning a meal ticket for camp
Meanwhile Dennis, Shappi, Stanley and Becky were helicoptered into the jungle, with Dennis and Shappi dropped off to complete their skydiving challenge.
Stanley and Becky were then dropped off next to a boatwreck with four 'hell holes' in its hull. The pair had to reach into the holes and pull out various coloured tokens.
When they had found all the tokens, they would set off a flare of the colour which appeared in the most tokens, in bid to earn a meal ticket.
Into the unknown: Stanley looked apprehensive as he and Becky headed into the jungle for their challenge
'My worse nightmare putting my hand into that hell hole now would be a massive spider' said Becky.
Stanley put his hand inside his first hole. 'I got bitten immediately. Bloody hell' he exclaimed as he pulled his hand out of the hole which contained crabs.
'I'm literally s*****ng myself' said Becky as she put her hand into a hole containing rats. 'Oh I wouldn't do that' replied Stanley.
What a wreck! After the pair were dropped off at a shipwreck, they discovered the Hell Holes-esque task at hand
Hell on earth: Becky revealed this would be her worst nightmare, while Stanley joked his worst nightmare would be a maths exam
'This is my worse nightmare' said Becky, leading Stanley to quip: 'I think my worst nightmare would be to do a maths exam.'
After suffering a nip from a crab, Stanley later commented: 'My hand is totally healed. I got a couple of pecks from a lobster I should have thought or a prawn or maybe a squid. By the way, did you know squids have very nasty beaks.'
The duo then radioed through their answers, with Stanley going for green and Becky purple.
Unfortunately only Becky was successful in earning a meal ticket with partner Dennis, as Stanley's partner Shappi failed to release the correct flare after her skydive.
Gross: The pair both seemed to squirm as they felt rats and toads inside the hole in a bid to collect tokens
Which colour? The pair then had to radio their buddies with the colour they believe to be the most commonly appearing on the tokens
Toff, Jamie, Amir, Vanessa and Jenny were the first campmates to reach this year's jungle camp. 'This is it' said Toff as she discovered the jungle clearing. 'I feel like Jungle Barbie!'
Amir said 'There's a lot of trees, a lot of leaves. I don't like the areas where there's a lot of leaves because I don't know what might be underneath and it's kind of messy when I walk through it.'
Playing the jungle expert, Amir got the campfire lit in near-record time, thanks to a touch of dried grass and toilet roll.
Jungle style: As the first six celebrities arrived in camp, they donned their camp gear for the first time
Exciting: The group seemed to be in good spirits as they first got a glimpse of their jungle home
Tarzan in the making: Amir successfully got the fire going, thanks to a touch of grass and toilet roll
The other campmates arrived and talk soon turned to the meal tickets. 'I have managed to lose a ration' explained a dejected Stanley.
Toff said 'I just wanted to give him the biggest hug and say don't be silly. It's fine. We don't mind.'
Stanley explained 'If it comes to the worse, it will be a bean situation. And when we've finished with the beans, it will be a has-bean situation.'
Sorry! Stanley admitted that he had cost the camp a meal ticket, and refused to accept one despite being the oldest person in the camp
I'm hungry: Toff was brutally honest in her want for food, saying there was no point in tip-toeing around the issue
The celebrities had won four meal tickets during the day's challenges, and then had to decide who would get them.
Amir suggested that Stanley had a meal ticket as he was the eldest campmate, but ever the gentleman he refused, saying: 'I'm absolutely not because a) I am the eldest and b) because I was the one person who didn't (win). You've got to play this game properly'
'That's irrelevant' Jamie rebutted. 'Stanley we're all in this together. Come on' he continued.
Deliberate: The camp-mates began to decide who would get the four meal tickets
Jungle meeting: There was some debate as to who should have the meal tickets
As the campmates discussed who was particularly hungry, Toff spoke up saying she's 'always hungry.'
'Why is everyone being so shy' the beauty added, saying later in the Bush Telegraph: 'I was kind of bored of everyone tip-toeing round the food situation. Let's just get on with it.'
Stanley said 'my view is, as long as women are happy, men are happy. That is one of the primary rules in life.'
Not impressed: Jennie seemed less than impressed by the results of the challenges
Man of knowledge: Stanley joked in the telegraph that the woman deserved the meal tickets as when 'women are happy, men are happy'
Jungle Janes: Vanessa and Jennie looked right at home in their camp gear
Vanessa, Jennie, Toff and Becky were eventually chosen as the ones who would eat, and made their way to Snake Rock to eat kangaroo for dinner.
Back in Croc Creek (main camp), the campmates were given basic rations of rice and beans. 'To be honest, I'm not being ungrateful, but my guinea pigs get more than this a day' said Shappi as she held up the meagre rations.
Amir cooked the rice and beans for the campmates. He said: 'rice and beans. I know it's a very simple food but I liked it.' 'If I eat this any day, I'd be alright' he added.
Just like steak: Vanessa, Jennie, Toff and Becky eventually enjoyed kangaroo for dinner
Is that it? The other six campmates were less than impressed by their rice and bear rations
Doing ok: Amir seemed more up-beat about the meal choices
