Police have raided five properties and arrested four men on suspicion of plotting a 'Christmas terror attack'. Specialist counter terrorism police officers kicked a door off its hinges as they arrested three men aged 22, 36 and 41, at addresses in Sheffield on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism. A 31-year-old man was arrested at an address in Chesterfield on suspicion of the same offence. All four were arrested by anti-terror police working with MI5 in the 'Islamist related' investigation, with people evacuated from their homes and schools placed on lock down this morning. Terrified residents described hearing explosions during the dramatic early morning raids on homes, offices and a community centre. They saw bomb disposal officers removing 'packages' - which come amid chilling warnings from ISIS threatening to attack festive events in the UK.

In a phone call to Mrs May, the US President confirmed he will press ahead with a 'working visit' to London pencilled in for late February. He will use the trip to open the new US embassy in London, while he is also expected to hold talks with the Prime Minister in Downing Street. But a planned meeting with the Queen will not take place until he makes a full state visit - plans for which are on ice. The President's visit to the UK comes despite a series of public clashes with Mrs May, including a major row last month when the Prime Minister condemned Mr Trump's decision to re-tweet anti-Muslim propaganda from far-Right group Britain First.

Mary Coll (left and far right) told how she had coffee daughter Clodagh Hawe and her husband Alan at her County Cavan home hours before he killed her and their three children (together inset), then hanged himself. Ms Coll said 'everything seemed normal' on the evening in question, and she had even wished Alan 'good luck' on his return to work as a deputy headteacher because she knew he was having difficulties. That evening he stabbed and slashed Cloudagh to death with a knife and axe, before cutting the throats of eldest children Liam, 13, and Niall, 11, then stabbing youngest Ryan, aged six.

Heather North has died at the age of 71 in Studio City, California after suffering from a long illness. The blonde actress was best known for voicing the character of pretty sleuth Daphne Blake on the popular animated TV series Scooby-Doo. North had time in front of the camera as she starred on the soap opera Days Of Our Lives.

Queen Alexandra Hospital (right) in Portsmouth, whose A&E; department has previously been described by the Quality Care Commission as 'chaotic', experienced an 'exceptionally difficult weekend' after a backlog of patients turned up with flu and other respiratory illnesses on Friday. At one point 23 ambulances (left) were queuing with patients waiting to be seen.

 What IS feminism? I realise that simply by asking that question as a man, I will be instantly accused of 'mansplaining' by hordes of enraged women. Emma Wren (left and right) was conceived and fertilized 24 years ago in 1992, but the embryo was frozen instead of implanted. Tina, who was born in 1991, could not conceive naturally with her husband Benjamin because he has cystic fibrosis, which renders 98 percent of sufferers infertile. They were going to adopt and started fostering children but then they heard they could adopt an embryo and have the experience of pregnancy as well. The process is like adoption, but the baby grows inside the adoptive mother. In March this year, the frozen embryo was thawed then donated to Tina and Benjamin. After a normal 40-week pregnancy with no issues, Tina gave birth naturally to Emma on November 25. Emma was born weighing six pounds and eight ounces, and measuring 20 inches long. Emma comes from the longest-ever frozen embryo, after one in Virginia which was frozen for 19 years and a few months. A new version of the London Tube map was issued today to mark a year from the opening of the new Elizabeth line. The line will stretch more than 60 miles and stop at 41 stations. There will be 10 new stations built while 31 others will be refurbished. Farringdon (ringed, inset left and right) will be one of the busiest stations in the country when Crossrail opens, connecting with Thameslink and London Underground to provide links with outer London, the home counties, the City, Canary Wharf and three of London's five airport.

Neil Jex, 52, died at the South Wales home he shared with two children and his wife Natasha, 31, in the village of Penywaun near Aberdare. Mr Jex was found in a pool of blood after a 999 call to the couple's home and his wife was arrested and later charged with murder. She is now due to appear at Merthyr Tydfil Magistrates Court later today.

Even if the deceased has opted for an eco-friendly wicker basket, you can't stop thinking about what's inside. Why do funerals need a body at all? The person who is dead couldn't care less. There's a growing movement in favour of liquidising the corpse (pictured top left) - instead of burning a huge amount of energy to incinerate us (hardly very green) - there's a process which 'cooks' cadavers in chemicals and water at around 160 degrees Centigrade (bottom left). Doesn't that sound attractive? It does to me.

With their soulful eyes and shiny coats, you'd think these rescue dogs would be just one wag of a tail away from finding their forever homes. But these cute pooches have been passed over time and time again. Why? Because they're all 'oldies'. RSPCA figures show that while puppies stay in UK sanctuaries for barely a fortnight, those over seven years old can languish for many months. It's heart-breaking both for the dogs, and those who look after them. Olive Armstrong, regional co-ordinator of The Oldies Club, a specialist website set up to re-home Britain's elderly dogs, says: 'We may have less time with them, but they tend to be house-trained, easier to deal with and you know their character - if they're good with children or other dogs.'

A group of travellers who caused chaos by parking more than 65 caravans across Cambridge North train station car park over the weekend were evicted earlier today by bailiffs. A man who called himself Big Doddie Stokes told Cambridge News that he had gathered 132 people and around 65 caravans together at the car park for Christmas

Somewhere in this herd of reindeer there is a single brown bear - but only the most eagle-eyed viewers will be able to find it. The festive scene is the latest creation from Hungarian artist Gergely Dudas, better known as Dudolf, who is responsible for a string of viral brainteasers. He became an online sensation when his puzzle of a panda lost among a group of snowmen went viral two years ago.

Silent movie mogul Fatty Arbuckle (pictured top inset) was accused of assaulting a young actress named Virginia Rappe (pictured right) at the St Francis Hotel in San Francisco in 1921 (main). Rappe died from a ruptured bladder, believed to have been a result of Arbuckle crushing her during the alleged assault. Smear campaigns were launched against both parties - and three manslaughter trials of Arbuckle ended with him being acquitted, and in a rare move, was issued an apology by the jury.

Victoria Beckham, 43, took her daughter Harper, six, (pictured left with her famous mother) to an art class over the weekend and proudly showed off the little girl's efforts on Instagram (right). Harper had added sweet decorations to lines from the nursery rhyme 'What Are Little Boys Made Of?', but the former Spice Girls followers said it sent a 'harmful' message to her daughter because it suggests girls must be sweet, while boys are allowed to be naughty.

And the celebrities of Dancing On Ice 2018 showed off their best moves for the first time on Tuesday at the series press launch, held at the Natural History Museum in London. Great British Bake Off winner Candice Brown, 32, was the picture of confidence in a thigh-skimming white leotard, complete with stylish fringed skirt as she hit the ice with partner Matt Evers for the first time, alongside her co-stars.

Social media is being flooded with the most outrageous Christmas manicures. Some nail artists that took the trend above and beyond were Seoul, South Korea-based nail artist Park Eunkyung, of nail salon Unistella, who posted her manicures to Instagram showing off nails decorated in silver tinsel with dangling ornaments attached. She even wrapped string lights around her fingers and had them light up. Another nail artist who showed off serious skills was Canadian Cristine Rotenberg - known online as Simply Nailogical - who posted a DIY tutorial showing how she made snow globe nails from scratch using clear gel top coat and baby oil. All of these Christmas manicures are getting us in the holiday spirit.

Firefighters and an RSPCA inspector were called to River Wansbeck in Ashington, Northumberland, after the adorable dog, Hardy, became trapped in the icy waters. Inspector Jaqui Miller climbed on the ice - attached to a firefighter - and used a pick to maneuver her way across the frozen rivers. A GoPro attached to Inspector Miller captured the scenes on Wednesday December 13, showing poor Hardy whimpering for help.

The little girl, from the indigenous Mbya Guarani community is said to beg for money with other youngsters during the day in the city of Posadas in the Argentina's north-east. Expensive car owners in Bristol have been slammed by environmentalists for fitting trees at a Bristol car park with 'anti-bird spikes' to stop pigeons defecating on their beloved vehicles. The spikes, installed to protect the pricey BMWs and Audis parked up under the trees, have been criticised for being unsightly and stopping birds nestling down in the branches.

A man dressed as Santa chased down a woman on his red motorbike after witnessing her knock down a pensioner with her car and then drive away in Paris on Friday. Keeping the camera strapped to his forehead on, Santa then watches in astonishment as the Clio does everything to avoid him and another driver who witnessed the original accident. It is only when they get to the Madeleine, the historic Roman Catholic Church close to the British Embassy in Paris, that two police officers become involved. Gavin Williamson today promised the repairs to fix a leak aboard the Royal Navy's new £3.1billion aircraft carrier will not cost taxpayers a penny. The HMS Queen Elizabeth was launched just weeks ago but already a 'significant' defect was found aboard which could cost millions to mend. But the Defence Secretary promised that taxpayers will not have to foot the bill and that instead the contractors who built her will have to cough up to fix the leaky seal.Sent out to sea a few weeks ago, the warship - dubbed 'Big Lizzie' - is the biggest and most powerful ever built by Britain. But a leak in the inflatable seal around one of the propeller shafts is causing the carrier to take on 200 litres of water every hour.

Officials aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Thetis came across the turtle in international waters of the Eastern Pacific Ocean on November 19 while on a 68-day patrol that ended on Saturday. Crew members spotted a 'debris field' and launched a small boat to investigate - only to find what appeared to be drug packages surrounding the entangled sea turtle. After freeing the turtle, they followed the 75-feet of line to find more than 1,800lb - worth approximately $50million - of cocaine in the debris field.

The lion is usually the top of the food chain in any safari park but for this vulnerable lioness who has been separated from her pride it is her who has become the hunted. The emaciated and injured big cat is launched into the air by the buffalo who is standing guard over his nearby herd. Without warning, he charges at the cat and launches her into the air. Field guide Bathabile Shakwane, 22, estimated that the lioness would have perished later that day due to starvation and exhaustion. The remarkable encounter was caught on video in the Kruger National Park in South Africa.

This is the astounding moment a one-year-old from Kannapolis, North Carolina, manages to escape from his living room by lifting his baby gate up and over his head. Determined not to leave behind any evidence, the toddler cunningly pushed the gate back into its originally place once he has successfully managed to get on the other side of it. Despite the white fence being as tall as him, the super-strong toddler manages to launch it over his head so he can escape into the kitchen.
