Coronation Street SPOILER: Back from the dead! Gary Windass dramatically returns after being 'killed off' in explosion... and reunites with arch nemesis Pat Phelan

He was thought to be killed in an explosion in the Ukraine

But popular Coronation Street character Gary Windass, played by Mikey North, was back from the dead as he prepared to shoot scenes as in Manchester on Friday.

The 31-year old was joined by fellow cast members Conor McIntyre, best known for his role as evil Pat Phelan, while taking a break between scenes on the long-running ITV soap.

Wrapped up in thick quilted jackets, both were braced for the fierce December cold as they idled on the exterior set with a female co-star.

The location, close to the same spot where Andy and Vinny were brutally killed at the hands of Phelan, suggests a gruesome discovery awaits Gary, whose departure from the show was confirmed in November.

Cameramen were seen heading to a nearby cluster of trees to film as the cast waited close to their trailers.

Gary has been a character on the cobbles since 2008, but news of his death first emerged in October, weeks before news of his apparent demise in the Ukraine while working for the chief executive of an oil company reached Weatherfield.

However, it was claimed earlier this week that the character actually fakes his own death in a 'huge twist', and will return to the beloved soap during the Christmas special.

A source told The Sun: 'Bosses have been trying to keep the Gary news under wraps.

'Gary's mum Anna is told in next week's scenes that he was killed driving a diplomat whose car was ambushed.

'To unexpectedly bring him back is a huge twist. Fans will love it.'

Previous images of Gary covered in blood emerged in December, perhaps marking the moment he is killed off.

The character could be seen sprawled on the pavement, with his face bloodied and bruised - but despite the distressing scene, actor Mikey North still managed to flash a smile during a break from filming.

In the upsetting scene, a blood covered Gary is seen lying on the ground down a back street, with his eyes closed as if unconscious.
