'He was the veteran on set!': Legendary Australian actor Hugh Jackman hails Zac Efron as the king of movie musicals

He has returned to his theatrical roots starring in The Greatest Showman.

And Zac Efron has been hailed as the king of movie musicals by his co-star Hugh Jackman.

In an interview with The Project on Wednesday, the Wolverine actor called the High School Musical star a 'veteran' on the set of the film.

'This is his fifth, by the way, fifth movie musical. He was the veteran on set,' Hugh proudly pointed out.

'I guess technically, yes,' an embarrassed Zac agreed.

'No-one else has done that many,' the Australian reiterated.

When asked about whether returning to the set of a movie musical was a risk, he said: 'it was more of a dream come true than a risk.'

'I was definitely nervous, but I was definitely excited to jump into this one,' he added.

Zac got his big break in the 2006 Disney movie High School Musical, which saw him go on to star the following two more sequels in the franchise, as well as the 2007 remake of Hairspray.

This comes after Hugh took to Instagram to share a candid snap of himself with Zac working out in the gym.

The Project co-host Liz Ellis had to ask who between them bench pressed the most.

Zac, in clear favour of his co-star, was quick to jump in saying: 'Need you ask?!'

'We don't measure, Liz. There is no measuring. No, no, that is just a beautiful photo,' Hugh quipped on the comedic cue as he cheekily pointed to himself.

'We don't care about that, we just go and do whatever feels right, you know,' he continued to joke.

The Greatest Showman will be released in cinemas on Boxing Day.
