James Packer has been spotted enjoying a lunch date with a mystery woman in Aspen, Colorado - after admitting his relationship with R&B superstar Mariah Carey was a mistake. 

The billionaire casino mogul enjoyed a meal and a cigarette with his glamorous lunch date, with the pair looking notably close as they sat alongside one another.

Tucked snugly into his snow jacket and shielding his eyes behind a pair of black sunglasses, Packer, 50, appeared to be in high spirits as he chatted away to his female companion in Aspen.

Meanwhile his guest was a breath of fresh air in a long tan coat, green scarf and tight ox-blood trousers.

Packer and the brunette looked happy as they left together, before enjoying a short stroll along the ski resort's highly trafficked path.

She later lit a cigarette for the businessman before appearing to ask for directions as they prepared to venture into the picturesque Colorado resort town.

Packer described how he met the songstress at a 'low point' in his life when debt within his empire was escalating.

He was also looking for a way to spend more time in Los Angeles to be close to the children he shares with second wife Erica.

Complicating personal aspirations was the increasingly painstaking negotiation process with his estranged sister Gretel over the allocation of their inheritance.

'I was at a low point in my personal life [when I met Mariah] Documenting the negotiations with my sister was taking longer than expected,' he said.

'She was kind, exciting and fun. Mariah is a woman of substance. She is very bright. But it was a mistake for her and a mistake for me.'

Contrary to speculation that he was pursuing a Hollywood lifestyle when he courted and proposed to Carey, Packer said he was interested in laying down American roots to be close to his children with his second wife.

'I was attempting to build a business in North America to be closer to my kids. The travel was unsustainable. It hurts me a lot to be away from them. But I don’t want to be in LA at the moment,' he said.

While he and Carey are no longer friends, he remains on good terms with Erica and said it was his biggest regret that their marriage failed.

'It is my biggest regret that I let my marriage to Erica fail. It is what it is and she is doing an incredible job with the kids and we are in a great place,' he said.

The revelations about his personal life were among others which related to doomed business ventures.

Over the past year, Packer has spent his time trying to reduce debt at Crown Casinos and CPH, Consolidated Press Holdings, which sky-rocketed as he invested.

The scale of the debt 'terrified' him and coincided with when he met Carey, he said.

Meanwhile it has been claimed that Packer and Carey quietly entered into a settlement agreement a few months ago, according to TheBlast.com.

It was claimed her overall settlement package is valued between $5 and $10 million.

The site also speculated that the hit maker has been able to keep the large diamond engagement ring he gave her.
