Letting off steam! Jack Nicholson, 80, puffs on an electronic cigarette as he cheers on his beloved Los Angeles Lakers with lookalike son Ray, 25

After more than half a century of consistent Hollywood success his retirement from the film industry to which he’s contributed so many memorable moments has been richly earned.

And Jack Nicholson looked typically relaxed as he occupied his regular courtside seat at Staples Centre in Los Angeles, where he was joined by lookalike son Ray on Monday evening.

The legendary actor, 80, was in high spirits as they watched the Los Angeles Lakers take on rivals the Golden State Warriors – a game they ultimately lost 114-116.

With an electronic cigarette clenched between his teeth, Lakers fan Jack looked on as his team played out the closely fought Western Conference face-off.

Sitting alongside his father, Ray, 25 – whose mother is actress Rebecca Broussard – looked equally at ease in a Lakers vest and matching baseball cap.

Father and son were joined by Kevin Hart and his wife Eniko Parrish, with both groups passing the time as they took in the game.

The game proved to be a special occasion for former Lakers player Kobe Bryant, who officially retired his squad number 8 and 24 jerseys in front of a star-studded crowd that included boxer Floyd Mayweather, actor David Arquette and Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine.

While Jack took the Lakers' latest defeat well, he is not always so easy going when it comes to his team being beaten.

He famously walked out on them back in 2013, taking Adam Sandler with him, as the Lakers were defeated by the Oklahoma City Thunder.

They ended up losing 116-101 - at the time their sixth consecutive defeat.

Jack has enjoyed a more relaxed lifestyle since his last film in 2010, How Do You Know, and has taken up painting as a hobby.

However it was rumoured he was considering coming out of his unofficial retirement to star alongside Kristen Wiig in a Hollywood remake of the Oscar-nominated German comedy Toni Erdmann.

The original film saw a practical joking father attempt to reconnect with his daughter by creating an outrageous alter ego and then posing as her boss's life coach.
