'The revival would once again be set at Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton, Pa., branch and feature a mix of new and old cast members,' the source shared.

Fans may disappointed to hear that Steve Carell's character, Scranton's regional manager Michael Scott, will not be involved in the series.

Carell portrayed the quirky leader of the branch's paper company for seven of the nine seasons.

When speaking to Deadline earlier this year about possible revivals of former shows after the successful relaunch of NBC's comedy Will & Grace, network president Bob Greenblatt said, 'We often talk about The Office.'

'I’ve talked to Greg [Daniels] four times over the past few years,' Bob said of the show's executive producer.

'It’s always, ‘Maybe someday, but not now’. There is certainly an open invitation, but we don’t have anything happening right now. If he wants to do it, I would do it.'

In November, Jenna Fischer spoke with Variety's podcast Remote Controlled about the likelihood the show would come back to television screens.

'I don’t think it’ll ever happen,' she said. 'I would do it if there was some circumstance where everybody got back together, and could be brought back together in some amazing way, I would say yes. But I’m not sure it’s realistic.'

The show starred a host of talented actors and writers, including Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, Craig Robinson, Mindy Kaling and B.J. Novak, and received 42 Emmy nominations while on air.
