A police officer was injured after a mass brawl broke out in a busy city centre crammed with Christmas shoppers today.  

Shocked witnesses described scenes of 'madness' as police descended onto the scene after thugs had fought in front of horrified families in Leicester.

Onlookers said violence erupted just before 4pm after a fight broke out between two teenage girls before a group linked to one of the brawlers got involved.

Police confirmed one girl had been arrested and had been taken into custody.  

There was an huge police presence outside Highcross shopping centre in Leicester as officers fought to restore order.

Around eight police cars arrived at the scene and an estimated 20 officers were called to quell the trouble.

One of the officers suffered 'minor injuries', a Leicestershire Police spokesman said. 

Footage posted online showed huge crowds of people standing outside the shopping centre following the trouble.   

A witness told the Mirror: 'It was a fight between two girls. There was a load of teenagers.

'Then one girls' group of friends came along and they were banging one girl. Then all these police came. They took one girl away.'

Onlookers told how police officers shouted at groups of shoppers and urged them to 'move away' from the area.

It has also been reported some shops were advised to close their doors early, despite it being one of the final shopping days before Christmas. 

Leicestershire Police confirmed that officers were called to the city centre this afternoon.

Police said a teenage girl has been arrested on suspicion of assault and is in police custody.
