A great grandmother was left with horrific leg injuries after being attacked by a dog as she walked her own pet just yards from her home.
Joanne Thomson's mother, 75, was savaged by what her family believe was a presa canario in Kearsley, Bolton at around 4pm on Tuesday.
The dog involved has been seized by police who are now investigating the horrific attack.
Joanne Thomson said that her mother was walking her pet cockapoo Bobby when the 'huge' dog leaped at them
The great gran was walking her tiny toy cockapoo Bobby at the time.
Mrs Thomson, 46, said she believed her mother tried to shield Bobby when the 'huge' dog attacked them on Springfield Road, Kearsley.
She was knocked to the floor and badly bitten.
Mrs Thomson, who called Bobby her mother's 'baby', said the attack fractured her mother's right leg in two places.
A great gran, 75, was walking her pet Bobby yards from her home in Bolton when they were attacked by the dog, believed to be a presa canario
The horrific photographs show the dog slashed and bit at her mother's lower legs, leaving her with shocking puncture wounds.
Mrs Thomson shared them on Facebook.
One wound is too big to be stitched and so she could need skin grafts.
Speaking as her mother was in theatre at the Royal Bolton Hospital, Mrs Thomson said the man who was walking the presa canario went to help her mother, as well as a mystery man in a white van called 'Jake'.
Mrs Thomson said: 'She could have been killed. She is now terrified, very anxious and scared. If it had got hold of an artery or her neck she could easily have been killed.
'If it would have been a child, they would have been dead. The police have been keeping us up to date with what has been going on and they have been fabulous.
Mrs Thomon said that her mother is 'terrified and very anxious' and could have been killed in the attack
'Officers even came back in to the hospital in their own time to give her a bouquet of flowers. They have gone above and beyond.
'I want to thank the man in the van who stopped. He picked up Bobby and threw him in the back of the van then went to help my mum.
'He was brilliant and I do not even know who he is. People were coming out with blankets and putting pressure on my mum's wounds. I want to thank everyone for their care.'
The attack took place just yards from her mother's home.
She said the presa canario, which was on a lead, lurched at Bobby and her mother put herself in the way.
Mrs Thomson said: 'Bobby is the size of a bag of sugar compared to the other dog.'
'The dog just savaged her. She fell under the weight of the dog, which wouldn't let go despite the man's attempts to get the dog off. My mum ended up lying on the floor covered in blood and the dog eventually let go.
'She has a massive gaping wound to her other leg and will have to undergo surgery and most probably skin grafts. This dog should have been muzzled at the very least.'
Police confirmed officers and paramedics were called at 3.55pm on Tuesday to a report that a 75-year-old woman had been bitten by a dog.
A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: 'The dog involved has been seized pending further investigations.'
The owner of the presa canario helped save the great grandmother from his dog.
The man left his details at the scene.
She was rushed to hospital and police took the dog into custody, saying that they will investigate the attack
The dog involved in the attack is believed to be a presa canario, a dog breed originating in the Canary Islands. (File photo)
