'If they were concerned I was too curvy they hid it well!' Kate Winslet reveals Titanic producers got her a personal trainer for the role

For years there have been rumours that director James Cameron was concerned about Kate Winslet’s figure in Titanic.

Yet the actress has hit back at claims that she was pressured into losing weight, by explaining that she was instead given a personal trainer to prepare for the role.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the Oscar-winning actress, 42, reasoned: 'I’ll tell you what they did do, and actually I look back on this and they handled it quite well.'

Adding that they drafted in a trainer despite the fact she was swimming four times a week, she continued: 'Clearly they were concerned about all of us being strong, being physically strong enough to get through ‘cause it was like being in a bootcamp...

'So if they had any concerns that I was slightly curvier than maybe they had wanted, they did a damn good job of hiding it by getting a personal trainer on board.'

Kate - who previously revealed she was body shamed by cruel bullies in her teens - also admitted she was 'absolutely nervous' to film her famous nude scene with Leonardo DiCaprio, but believed the execution was 'handled quite beautifully.'

MailOnline has contacted James Cameron's representatives for comment.

Titanic was released in 1997, and went on to become one of the most successful films ever - bagging eleven of the fourteen Oscars it was nominated for the year after its release, and grossing a whopping $2 billion worldwide.

The film is a fictionalised account of the RMS Titanic's sinking in April 1912, which killed more than 1500 passengers after the ship collided with an iceberg.

James Cameron's screen version followed the story of the wandering Jack Dawson and upper class Rose DeWitt Bukater - who fall in love aboard the ship, ahead of its tragic voyage.

It was the second film in history to do so after 2009 flick Avatar, directed once again by James.

It also shot Kate and Leonardo to super-stardom after playing star-crossed lovers Rose and Jack in the film. The pair have remained close friends ever since.

Earlier this year, Kate spoke out about her body issues as a child, before later revealing that she now hasn't weighed herself for 12 years.

Speaking at a charity event in May, the mother-of- said she was made to feel that 'she wasn't enough' because of her body.

'I was even told that I might be lucky with my acting', she told the WE Day UK audience. 'If I was happy to settle for the fat girl parts'.

She added: 'I didn't look right. And all because I didn't fit into someone else's idea of "perfect". I didn't have the perfect body.'
