The Black Swan director and Hunger Games actress started dating a year ago, just after they finished filming the psychological thriller, which also stars Javier Bardem, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer.

When asked if she had any hesitations in working with her beau, Jennifer told OK magazine: 'No. It was an instant yes before I even read anything. He told me his ideas and I thought that they were brilliant, unique and challenging.

'I've been a fan of him for years. I think he's bold and brave. I said yes and then when I read [the script] I threw it across the room and told him he had severe psychological problems. But it's a masterpiece.'

But Mother!, which follows a dark storyline about the wife of an author and poet and her desire for his fans to leave their house, only ranked third at the box office this weekend, taking a disappointing $7.5million (£5.54million) - the lowest opening of Jennifer's career.

The movie drew a rare F from the ComScore website despite a fairly strong 69 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Darren didn't seem too concerned by the relatively negative response to his film.

He told Entertainment Weekly: 'Anytime you do something that aggressive there are going to be people who enjoy it, who want to be on that roller coaster ride, and then there are others who say, "Oh no, that was not for me."

'It's a strange one. You see Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, and Michelle Pfeiffer and people are conditioned for a certain type of movie. And… we didn't do that type of movie.'

The news comes after JLaw revealed she's losing interest in having children as she approaches her thirties.

The A-list actress, chatting to E! News on Wednesday, said her desires to reproduce 'are actually getting less and less' as she gets older, which is 'starting to worry' her.

'I don't think that's how it's supposed to work!' the Kentucky native said, adding that her state of mind was drastically different five years ago.

She said: 'When I was 21 or 22 I was like, "I can't wait to be a mother." Now I'm like...'

She said: 'When I first read the script I thought it's too dark. I didn't even want the script in my house and then I realised that's why he's a genius.

'That's why I have always wanted to work with him. He's unafraid. He's bold and I do agree with the message.'

The Hunger Games actress stars in the film alongside Javier Bardem, who revealed in an interview with MTV that Jen retreated to a tent to watch Kardashians reality shows for a break from the morose energy on the film set.

Until that point, Javier said he 'didn't know who they were.'

Javier, 48, said his co-star was shocked that he didn't have a clue about the existence of the reality TV family.

'She was laughing at me so hard [and said,] "You don’t know who the Kardashians are?"' the actor said. 'Like she was talking to me about Einstein.'

Javier, who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in No Country for Old Men in 2008, said he told his on-screen wife: 'No, I don't know who those people are. What's their planet? Where are they coming from? What do they want? Where is the spaceship?'

Javier, who is married to Hollywood heavyweight Penelope Cruz, said he's since caught up with the exploits of Kim, Momager Kris Jenner and the rest of the first family of reality TV.
