Today on top! NBC morning show is ratings leader for a THIRD straight week after the firing of Matt Lauer

  • For a third straight week, the Today show has been the morning show leader in total viewers and viewers ages 25-54
  • Today typically loses to Good Morning America on total viewers, but has had a lock on the 25-54 viewership
  • But since the departure of Matt Lauer last month, the NBC morning show has been the leader in both
  • For December 11-15, Today recorded 4.568million total viewers to ABC's 4.509million
  • In the 25-54 category, they had 1.688million while GMA got 1.439million
  • The 25-54 demographic is a more important figure for advertisers

The Today show continues to rake in the viewers after Matt Lauer's firing.

According to ratings data released Tuesday, the NBC morning show has beat ABC's Good Morning America in total ratings for a third straight week.

GMA typically wins total viewers, while Today holds down with the 25-54 demographic - which is more important to advertisers.

But for three straight weeks since Lauer's ousting for a sexual harassment complaint, Today has been top dog in both categories.

For the week of December 11-December 15, Today recorded 4.568million total viewers to ABC's 4.509. As usual, CBS lagged behind both with 3.695million viewers

In the 25-54 category, they got 1.688million while GMA got 1.439million and CBS 1.004million.

The last time that happened was during the Rio Olympics. NBC has the rights to air the Olympics, so for two straight weeks it usually tops ratings. But it got another week of top ratings out of it at the end of the games, when swimmer Ryan Lochte became embroiled in an international scandal.

Lochte lied about being robbed at gunpoint during the games, and continued to peddle the fallacy in an interview with then Today co-host Billy Bush.

It's unclear how long this winning streak will last for Today.

Already, GMA is making inroads. On Tuesday and Thursday, it beat Today out for total viewers.

The fact that the show seems to be doing just fine without Lauer may have an impact on whether the network decides to fill his vacated position.

Since his firing, Kotb has been filling in as Guthrie's co-anchor, but there have been rumors that Craig Melvin or Willie Geist may be tapped to fill that role on a permanent basis.

On November 29, Savannah Guthrie announced Lauer's firing live on air, with the help of co-anchor Hoda Kotb. Kotb has remained by Guthrie's side since then as the interim co-anchor, but it's possible the good numbers could entice NBC to leave the line-up as is.

Just a week before Lauer's firing, CBS This Morning experienced a similar scandal when co-host Charlie Rose was fired for his own sexual harassment scandal.

However, that show did not experience a bump in viewership like Today.
