RIO DE JANEIRO — International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach was introduced at the opening ceremony on Friday, to decent applause.

But interim Brazilian President Michel Temer was not introduced at the start of the ceremony, even though program guide said there would be a presentation of the president before the national anthem.

When he did appear to open the Games near the end of the ceremony, Temer did so from the stands.

Usually, the heads of state come to the main floor to open the Games. Bill Clinton did so 20 years ago. Valdimir Putin did the same in Sochi two years ago.

Temer was once an ally and vice president of now-suspended President Dilma Rousseff, who is awaiting trial on impeachment charges.

Rousseff and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, her predecessor and the president who led the charge to host the Games, were not expected to attend the ceremony.

Rousseff and da Silva have called Temer’s efforts to oust her from office a coup.

Folha de São Paulo reported that activists had planned to boo him as he announced the opening of the Olympics.

If Temer was booed when he appeared, they were not loud enough to be heard over the cheers of the crowd.
