Woman's body found after house fire Christmas at Merimbula

A 61-year-old woman has been found dead inside a burning home after a man was pulled out of the smouldering house alive. Emergency services were called to a home at Tura Beach, Merimbula, on NSW's Far South Coast on about 12.30am on Christmas after a man woke to find smoke filling his bedroom. Two officers entered the burning building and found a 67-year-old man on the floor and helped him to safety, but the intensity of the fire prevented them from searching further. The number of Christmas tragedies has soared after a two-year-old boy drowned in a swimming pool, three died in a high-speed crash and a young boy died in a quad bike accident.

A 19-year-old Russian student has been found strangled to death with her body wrapped in clingfilm after responding to an advertisement for a 'governess' with a 'model appearance'. Kristina Prikhodko (pictured left and inset) was missing for two days before her body was discovered in a forest (pictured right) close to Siberia's largest city. The student had been sexually attacked before being strangled to death, say police, who have arrested two men, both aged 28, on suspicion of murder. They warned about men using advertisements to lure young women for sex under false pretences. It is known that Kristina had posted revealing pictures of herself and was this year registered on a site where women can meet 'sugar daddies'. Her naked body was wrapped in clingfilm and put inside a zip-up bag which was found on snow-covered ground dumped close to a reservoir on the River Ob near Novosibirsk city. Two men caught driving a car in which the body was transported were later arrested on suspicion of murder.

Dramatic moment 200 skiers are rescued from chair lifts above French Alps resort after being trapped for two hours

Rescue operations were underway on Sunday afternoon at the Chamrousse Ski Resort in the eastern Isere region of France after the lift broke down at about 3pm local time. Video shared by those caught up in the incident showed rescuers hanging from ropes from helicopters, swinging back and forth near the stationary bubbles. No injuries were reported and rescues were complete by 5.30pm. Violaine Demaret, the prefecture official, says two civil security helicopters dropped rescue personnel over every car to open the roof hatches, release the skiers inside and lower them down to safety with ropes.

A passer-by managed to film the hilarious break down operation and said: 'The man was sitting on his own bike while being carried home. I've never seen this happen before. Only in the Philippines.'

The mass wedding in Surat in the western state of Gujarat, India, featured 251 young couples, including five Muslim couples, a Christian couple and two women who are HIV positive. The celebration was hosted by Indian diamond trader Mahesh Savani. Savani, who believes that giving away brides is a blessing from God, has been funding and organising mass weddings for fatherless women in Surat every year since 2012. He performs the Hindu wedding ritual of 'Kanyadaan' - the practice of giving away one's daughter in marriage.
