'I was told there would be tea': Pop diva Mariah Carey calls her New Year's Eve show a 'disaster' as she breaks live broadcast to demand a hot drink... one year after shambolic Rockin' Eve performance in NYC

Last year, her New Year's Eve performance was branded 'awkward' and 'lackluster' by the critics.

But it was Mariah Carey who called her Rockin' Eve show a 'disaster' on Sunday night as she demanded a hot tea like the revellers in New York's Times Square.

The 47-year-old pop diva broke up her live gig to ask for a beverage despite redeeming herself with a flawless performance.

'They told me there would be tea,' Twitter claim Carey said to the audience, before exclaiming. 'Oh, this is a disaster.'

It caused much amusement among social media users, some which were eagerly sharing memes about the star.

'The first meme of 2018 was Mariah Carey asking for hot tea,' said one amused fan on Sunday night.

Another added: '"They told me i'd have hot tea" famous last words of 2017- Mariah Carey.'

One other amused user said: 'I'm using that line every time I'm disappointed in 2018.'

'Mariah Carey demanding hot tea is exactly how I hoped the year would begin,' declared another.

One fan shared: 'I now think 2018 is going to be amazing - Happy New Year to all. Especially @MariahCarey'

Others called her angry ramble 'the right way to enter 2018' and one other said 'If Mariah Carey can make it through that performance without her hot tea, then I can make it through another year.'

Luckily, the pop diva - who has in the past been accused of making outrageous demands - saw the funny side and shared a picture with a tea cup later that night, telling her fans, 'Found my tea!'

Her live appearance 12 months ago ended in disaster after a myriad of problems left her visibly upset and she stopped singing, despite a pre-recorded track playing in the background.

'I'm just going to take a sip of tea if they'll let me. They told me there would be tea,' she said, but no hot drink materialized.

The singer then launched into her 1993 ballad Hero with backup singers in white robes behind her.
