'I do not want to be defined by who I share my bed, my home, my soul with,' she said. 'My choices in life have been unconventional, and that's my business.

'But I do want to live responsibly and truthfully without hiding. It’s complicated, because there is a lot of hate in this world, and a lot of good can come from quote-unquote normalizing something for people who don’t see it as normal.

'Our relationship represents a certain amount of hope and risk. Maybe there’s something brave in it. Maybe it encourages others to make brave choices. What else can I say? We love each other.'

The American Crime Story star also discussed her fears about having children, explaining she worries she may be too 'selfish' to raise a family because motherhood can be a struggle for actresses.

Sparkle in a sequin skirt by N°21 like Sarah

Sarah Paulson sizzled as she posed up a storm for Town and Country magazine wearing an array of stylish designer outfits.

We love this particular combo of a chic shirt by MaxMara teamed with a skirt by N°21. The all-black ensemble may be devoid of colour but the contrasting sheer and sequin textures provide more than enough interest.

Party season may be over and done with but we've still very much got sequins on the brain right now. Sarah's skirt is about as luxe as sparkles get, as it's hot from the N°21 catwalk and costs a whopping £1944!

Click right to pre-order it at Moda Operandi if you feel like splashing out, or try and spot the difference between the budget buys in our edit below from Pure Collection, Warehouse, Fashion Union and PrettyLittleThing. Team with a sheer shirt and heels to channel Sarah's look!

She explained: 'I don’t want to be torn. I don’t want to look at my child and say, "You’re the most extraordinary thing that ever happened to me, but also the death knell".

'It was hard for my mother to be everywhere, to come to the school play and make a living, I’ve always known what I wanted out of professional life, and I didn’t want to turn around and go, "If I had only made the choice to just dedicate this time in my life to me".

'It’s selfish, but I think the word selfish gets a bad rap.'

Sarah's role in American Crime Story has propelled her to fame since she landed her part back in 2011, and she has since gone on to receive numerous award nominations for the critically-acclaimed FX series.

In 2016, she took on the part of prosecutor Marcia Clark in the first season of the anthology series American Crime Story, The People v. O. J. Simpson, winning an Emmy, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award.

But in spite of her stellar career in recent years, the former Broadway actress admitted she is constantly striving to reach new heights of success.

She explained: 'Five years ago I was a disappointed actress. I was a benched player. I wanted a shot, and I felt I wasn’t getting a shot.

'Going to the next level means that you’re at the bottom of the next rung. Look, many of them [top-tier actresses] have won Academy Awards.

'I don’t expect to get offered those roles before them, but I still want them. All it means is that I have to keep working the way I always have, leaving my ego at home and trying to just think about what is true.

'I’ve got a window as a woman of 43… I’m trying to keep it open with both hands, as wide as possible, for as long as possible.'

Sarah's most recent role has been in the critically-acclaimed Steven Spielberg political thriller, The Post, in which she portrays Antoinette 'Tony' Pinchot Bradlee, the wife of The Washington Post's executive editor, Ben Bradlee.

The movie documents the real-life story of an unprecedented battle between journalism and government in publishing the Pentagon Papers, and has been nominated for numerous Critics' Choice and Golden Globes.

Speaking of her co-stars, including the likes of Academy Award winners Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep, Sarah said: 'These are arguably the most respected filmmakers and actors of their generation.

'That made it a very extraordinary place to be. It was a pinch me moment.'

Sarah has been more vocal about her romance with Holland of late, and recently defended their relationship and age gap in a revealing interview.

'My life choices are unconventional,' she said in an interview with The Edit. 'I’m with a much older person and people find that totally fascinating and odd, and, to me, it’s the least interesting thing about me.

'But I am a woman of a certain age who chose not to have children, and who has made my career my priority. I am the captain of my own ship, and I’ve never looked to anyone else to validate that.'

The actress also revealed many executives warned her against going public with the relationship.

She explained: 'Early on, when people found out I was with Holland, some said "I think you have to be careful, I’m afraid it’s going to affect your career negatively," I was like, what? It never occurred to me at all.'
