Helen Mirren, 72, wows in leg-baring lace as she joins Viola Davis on stage to present at Golden Globes

She was wearing plain black in solidarity with the Time's Up movement.

And, as always, Helen Mirren looked her very best as she wowed at the Golden Globes on Sunday night.

Now 72, the age-defying British actress showed off her incredible figure in the gown, which while long-sleeved, featured a leg-baring section of lace.

Sport Helen Mirren's sophisticated black lace gown

From a fashion perspective, one of the really lovely things about last night's Globes was that it proved how wearing a black dress is just as chic as wearing a colourful showstopper, if not more so. And it doesn't have to be boring. Case in point: Helen Mirren, who wore a beautiful lace-paneled gown by Zuhair Murad. The design was a floor-length lace and silk number with sheer inserts decorating the limbs. Helen completed the look with diamond earrings and a necklace, which neatly complimented the round neckline of the dress.

Black is always the chicest way to do sheer. It's a glamorous way of breaking up a black dress and adds a hint of sexy to a colour that is historically demure. It's also a nice way to flash just a little flesh whilst keeping things sophisticated and flattering.

While we love this gown on Helen Mirren, it's going to set you back over £5000, and that's after you've contacted the brand specifically to get your hands on it. If, like us, that's totally out of your price range, fear not. We've collated a little selection of black lace-insert gowns below, ranging from a high street steal to a fashion-forward must-have by Self-Portrait.

Her white hair styled in a sleek short style, Dame Helen accessoried with diamonds and a slick of red lipstick.

Helen joined Viola Davis on stage to present Best Performance By An Actor In A Supporting Role in any Motion Picture.

And the two proved a winning double act, as they set up their award presentation to Sam Rockwell.

'Supporting actors are not really supporting at all,' began Viola, with Helen quickly adding: 'Just with not as many lines.'

In a back and forth Viola agreed with: 'Or close ups.'

'Or personal make up artists,' said Helen.

'Or publicists.' 'Or remuneration.'

Social media success: The pair were a hit on Twitter

The pair's double act certainly won over Twitter, with fans such as author Glennon Doyle commenting: 'Um my screen just exploded in badassery.'

Another fan, wrote: Helen Mirren and Viola Davis is the buddy movie I need Hollywood.

And it seems the friendship was not just an act, with the pair swigging champagne backstage together after their moment in the spotlight.
