The Post - which starred Hanks and was directed by Spielberg - had been nominated for Best Picture at the ceremony, and Hanks had received a Best Actor nod for his role.

The duo seemed content missing the awards to enjoy a night out with Capshaw and Cranston, however, possibly discussing a hotly-anticipated collaboration.

Spielberg, Hanks and Cranston have only worked on one project together in the past - Saving Private Ryan - which earned Spielberg a Best Director Oscar and Hanks a nomination for Best Actor.

Cranston only appeared briefly in the flick and was not credited for his role.

Not fussed: Seeming in great spirits, Steven seemed to have had a great evening with his friends, despite skipping The Critics' Choice Awards where his latest film The Post has been nominated for Best Picture

Most recently, Spielberg and Hanks worked together in The Post, which follows The Washington Post's former publisher Kay Graham - played by Meryl Streep - who became the first female publisher of the American newspaper, while Hanks plays editor Ben Bradlee in the historical drama.

It is set in the years following the Vietnam War - which was released in the US on December 22 - and centres around The Washington Post's race to secure and publish the classified Pentagon Papers in 1971, which exposed a government cover-up spanning decades.

Hanks and Spielberg have a great history of working together in the past, with the pair collaborating for critically acclaimed films, Bridge Of Spies, Catch Me If You Can and The Terminal.

In 2016, Spielberg and Cranston teamed up for All the Way - a biographical television drama film based on events of the presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson.

Meanwhile, Cranston and Hanks have been close for decades, with the Breaking Bad star previously admitting the Oscar-winner was his mentor.

He told The Hollywood Reporter: 'I have known [Hanks] for 30 years, and I've watched him on set. Our wives are very good friends, and my wife was in their wedding.

'I was able to watch firsthand how a young man who is a star comports himself and treats people and is able to create an atmosphere on the set that is fun and welcoming of thoughts and ideas and get-the-work-done and then, "See ya," go home.

'You can have it all. You don't have to be the tortured actor and make everyone's life miserable.'
