'The language is a bit strong': Comedy legend David Jason slams Mrs Brown's Boys for its use of swear words...but admits he's a big fan of hit show

Comedy legend David Jason has criticised award winning show BBC Mrs Brown’s Boys for its regular use of profanities.

Despite being a fan, Jason – best known for his role as Cockney market trader Del Boy Trotter in Only Fools and Horses - believes its use of swear words alienates key audience members and prevents it from being a regular family show.

He told The Mirror: ‘I think Mrs Brown’s Boys in particular is very good, though I do find that perhaps the language is a bit strong for a family, but it is very popular and I think it’s very funny.

‘I just find the language is a bit strong if you want to watch it with your little ones.’

The show, created by and starring Brendan O’Carroll, has enjoyed enormous success since making the transition from long-running, widely toured stage show to BBC sitcom in 2011.

It was named the most watched show on Christmas Day, beating BBC flagship EastEnders, with seven million viewers tuning in to its festive special.

That number pales in comparison to the 24-million viewers commanded by Only Fools and Horses for their 1996 Christmas Special, and Jason, 77 believes his own success relates to the general accessibility of his shows.

He said: ‘I believe one of the reasons is that the whole family can watch Open All Hours and feel safe. Not only is it funny, silly and daft but there is no worry that your gran at 90 will see something. There won’t be sex or swearing or anything like that.’

The actor added that he will soon be back as show owner Granville after Open All Hours spin-off Still Open All Hours received a warm reception from fans.

'It’s doing so well they’ve asked me to do some more and why should I refuse my public?' he said.

Mrs Brown's Boys started off as a stage show before being picked up by the BBC and becoming a TV smash hit.

It first aired on the channel on New Year's day 2011 to huge acclaim and a movie, called Mrs. Brown's Boys D'Movie, was released three years later.
