The Las Vegas Sun has received numerous accolades from a variety of media organizations in the paper’s history, including taking top honors in 2010 in nationally prestigious competitions for online, print and broadcast journalism. In 2009, the Sun won the Pulitzer Prize.

Greenspun Media Group collects 126 awards in annual statewide contest

The Nevada Press Association honored Greenspun Media Group with 126 awards, including 54 first-place plaques, making GMG the most decorated media group in the state.

Las Vegas Weekly, VEGAS INC websites take top honors

The sites, lasvegasweekly.com and vegasinc.com, were awarded EPPYs in the categories of Best Entertainment Website with less than 1 million unique monthly visitors and Best Business/Finance Website with less than 1 million unique monthly visitors, respectively.

Greenspun Media Group takes most honors in Nevada Press Association contest

Four Greenspun Media Group publications — the Sun, Las Vegas Weekly, VEGAS INC and Las Vegas Magazine — garnered 96 awards — including 46 first-place journalism honors, more than any other media company in Nevada.

Las Vegas Sun, Weekly websites win elite online journalism awards

Lasvegassun.com won two first-place honors in the prestigious EPPY Awards for “Grace Through Grief.” The series was named best news or event feature on a website with more than 1 million unique monthly visitors, tying with the Boston Globe’s collection of content stemming from the Boston Marathon bombing, and was honored for best use of photography on a website with more than 1 million monthly visitors. The relaunch of lasvegasweekly.com was named the best redesign among websites with fewer than 1 million unique monthly visitors.

“Grace Through Grief,” was a finalist for an Online Journalism Award for feature projects. The award, given by the Online News Association and the School of Communication at the University of Miami, honor the best in online news from around the world.

Best News Story: Online Media for MGM fire anniversary

The Sun's special package on the 32nd anniversary of the fatal MGM Grand fire was named the best news story: online media in the annual International Association of Fire Fighters media awards.

Sun’s website named best in the country

The National Headliner Awards, one of the oldest and largest annual contests recognizing journalistic merit in the communications industry, named LasVegasSun.com the best newspaper website in the nation.

The Sun, LV Weekly, VEGAS INC snag nearly 100 awards in Nevada press contest

Three Greenspun Media Group publications — the Sun, Las Vegas Weekly and VEGAS INC, received a combined 94 awards in the annual journalism competition that honors the best in the business. Awards included best story of the year for “The Turnaround: Inside Clark County Schools."

The Las Vegas Sun website was a finalist for three EPpy awards from Editor and Publisher: one for best sports website, one for best home page, and one for best entertainment blog for the Kats Report. In addition, the Las Vegas Weekly was a finalist for best entertainment website and VEGAS INC was a finalist for best business/finance website.

The Turnaround: Inside Clark County Schools" was named as a finalist for an Online Journalism Award for topical reporting. The awards, given by the Online News Association and the School of Communication at the University of Miami, honor the best in online news from around the world.

Sun's website wins international journalism awards

The Las Vegas Sun website received two EPpy awards from Editor and Publisher: one for best community service on a media-affiliated website and one for best enterprise feature on a website. EPpy awards were also given to Greenspun Media Group for the Las Vegas Weekly as best entertainment website and VEGAS INC as best business/finance website.

Sun reporters win another national journalism award for investigative hospital care series

The Scripps Howard Foundation National Journalism Awards selected "Do No Harm: Hospital Care in Las Vegas" as the winner in the premier category, investigative reporting, "for lifting the veil of secrecy around widespread medical errors and infections contracted at local hospitals."

'Do No Harm' headlines 34 awards for Las Vegas Sun

The Nevada Press Association honored the Las Vegas Sun with 34 awards, including 15 first-place prizes involving investigative projects, feature writing, opinions and design, as well as for serving the community and upholding freedom of the press.

Society of Professional Journalists honors 'Do No Harm' for online presentation

The Society of Professional Journalists recognized the Las Vegas Sun's investigation into hospital care with the Sigma Delta Chi Award for the best digital media presentation of the year.

Sun wins national media award for telling the story of gambling addiction

The Las Vegas Sun in December won a national broadcast journalism award for "Bottoming Out: Gambling Addiction in Las Vegas", becoming the first print-based news organization to receive the award for multimedia storytelling. The Sun was one of 13 winners of the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards. Other winners include CBS News' "60 Minutes," ABC News' "20/20," BBC News America, PBS' "Frontline" and National Public Radio.

Series on gambling addiction recognized nationally

In July,"Bottoming Out: Gambling Addiction in Las Vegas" was named "best multimedia storytelling among newspapers" from the American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors.

Las Vegas Sun captures international online journalism awards

In October, Sun earned several awards from the Online News Association, an international organization that presents annual awards to honor online journalism and multimedia storytelling. LasVegasSun.com was awarded top honors for General Excellence in Online Journalism, medium site, making it the third year in a row the site has won the award. The Sun and Greenspun Media Group also received an award for Online Video Journalism, Medium Site, for the three-part series Bottoming Out: Gambling Addiction in Las Vegas, which was also a finalist for ONA's award for Outstanding Use of Digital Technologies, Professional. The Sun was also a finalist for two other ONA awards, The Knight Award for Public Service and the Gannett Foundation Award for Innovative Investigative Journalism, Large Site, for the in-depth health care series Do No Harm: Hospital Care in Las Vegas.

Websites of the Sun, Las Vegas Weekly win top honors

In June, LasVegasSun.com was honored as the best news website in its size class by Editor & Publisher magazine. LasVegasSun.com won three top prizes and was a finalist in four other categories in the 2010 EPpy Awards, the premier international awards for media-affiliated websites and blogs. The newspaper's sister publication, Las Vegas Weekly, won an EPpy for Best Regional Magazine-Affiliated Website.

Stories about troubled CityCenter and about what lessons recession-slammed Las Vegas can learn from the Rust Belt have been named as among the best examples of business writing in the nation in 2009 by the Society of American Business Editors and Writers.

Sun writer honored for health care reporting

Marshall Allen won first place in the health care beat reporting category in a national competition sponsored by the Association of Health Care Journalists.

National Headliner Awards

Sun reporters, Web staff win national honor

The Sun also won second place in the National Headliner Awards in the "Journalistic Innovation" category, recognizing the success of Sun print and online journalists in producing the multimedia project "Bottoming Out: Gambling Addiction in Las Vegas."

Sun wins the Pulitzer Prize

The Las Vegas Sun on the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service — journalism's most prestigious award — for its investigation of construction deaths on the Las Vegas Strip and the failures of government, management and labor unions to protect workers. Judges singled out Sun staff writer Alexandra Berzon for "courageous reporting" in persevering against closed doors and intimidation. Berzon, 29, may have been the last Sun employee to learn of the award. When the prize was announced, Berzon was at a court hearing for a lawsuit about worker safety.

The Las Vegas Sun has won the 2009 Roy W. Howard public service reporting award for stories and editorials that led to sweeping safety improvements at Las Vegas Strip construction sites following a string of worker deaths.

The Las Vegas Sun has been named one of 10 U.S. newspapers "that do it right" by the media trade journal Editor & Publisher.

Water project earns Sun a national award

The Las Vegas Sun has won a national journalism award for its in-depth, multimedia study of the water crisis facing the Las Vegas Valley. The project, "Quenching Las Vegas' Thirst," won the Associated Press Managing Editors Association outstanding journalism award for online convergence. The competition was among the nation's largest circulation newspapers.

Reporter, copy editor receive honors in national contest

Two Las Vegas Sun journalists won awards from a newspaper industry association dedicated to excellence in feature writing. Reporter Abigail Goldman won first place for feature specialty reporting for her coverage of law enforcement, and copy editor John Paul McDonnall won first place in headline writing.

Sun earns 6 awards in Best of the West contest

The Las Vegas Sun has won six awards in the 2009 Best of the West competition, which honors the best journalism among newspapers in the 13 Western states.

Sun's worker death stories among national standouts

Sun reporter's body of work on construction deaths in Las Vegas was one of the finest examples of "local accountability reporting" last year, according to the American Society of Newspaper Editors.
