Wonder Woman with Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins is completely shut out of Oscar race... even though Batman and Superman have been recognized in years past

Wonder Woman did very well at the 2017 box office.

But the superhero film was completely left off the Academy Award nominations list on Tuesday.

There had been talk that Patty Jenkins might be recognized for Best Director or that Gal Gadot might be given a Best Actress nod, but neither happened.

The film did not even receive any special effects, cinematography or sound editing nominations either.

There was talk that perhaps it would fall into the Best Costume category for the clever Wonder Woman suits as well as historically accurate WWII military clothing.

But there was nothing for the DC Comics film which made over $800 million in worldwide box office.

In the past, several Batman and Spider-Man films have been given Oscar love in sound editing, special effects and cinematography categories.

Nothing for him either: Gadot's male co-star was Chris Pine

The film - which also starred Chris Pine and Robin Wright - did so well there is a sequel in the works.

Superhero movies usually don't do very well at the Oscars.

But some do get recognition.

They have all been male dominated however: 1978's Superman, 1989's Batman, 1992's Batman Returns, 1995's Batman Forever, 2002's Spider-Man, 2004's Spider-Man 2, 2005's Batman Begins, 2006's Superman Returns, 2008's Iron Man, 2008's The Dark Knight, and 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier were all given nods.

Another strong female: Robin Wright also had a role in the very successful movie

But these films got attention: Both Batman and Superman movies have had Oscar nods

Other snubs included Tom Hanks missing out on best actor for The Post and James Franco not getting his expected Best Actor nod for The Disaster Artist in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations.

Angelina Jolie did not get a nod in the Foreign Film category for First They Killed My Father. She was not shortlisted, but fans were hoping for a surprise.

But the animated film she produced, The Breadwinner, was singled out.
