Something's Coming! Steven Spielberg's long gestating remake of iconic musical West Side Story releases casting call for leads

He has apparently long been interested in making a new version of West Side Story.

And it seems Steven Spielberg's dream is finally coming true.

A casting call has gone out for the project, according to Showbiz 411 on Thursday.

The script is being written by Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Kushner, 61, who is the 71-year-old director's frequent collaborator.

Steven has also recruited the producer of the 2009 Broadway revival of West Side Story, Kevin McCollum, 55, as a producer for his movie.

Casting director Cindy Tolan is seeking actors to play the musical's four young leads Maria, Tony, Bernardo and Anita, Broadway World reported.

All four actors must be able to sing while Maria, Anita and Bernardo must also be able to speak Spanish.

Inspired by Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet, it's set in the Upper West Side of New York City in the mid 1950s.

Rival gangs the Jets, white teens, and the Sharks, Puerto Rican teens, face off every day.

Things go badly awry when Tony, a former member of the Jets, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Sharks leader Bernardo.

The musical opened on Broadway in 1957 with a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and choreography by Jerome Robbins.

It introduced the world to now classic songs including Something's Coming, Maria, America, Somewhere and Tonight.

The 1961 movie was co-directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins based on the dark musical.
