Dozens of people were trapped in cars and restaurants after a water pipe burst in Hammersmith, west London. London Fire Brigade said 35 firefighters attended. Police were preventing residents living on the flooded street from entering their homes as there was a risk of electrocution earlier this evening. The flooding began around 8.15pm, and the streets were cleared of water around 1.25am. One Twitter user living in the area claimed that the leak began as early as 11.30am.

Paul Young's wife dies after two-year battle with cancer

The wife of Eighties singer Paul Young has tragically died at the age of 52 following a two-year battle with brain cancer. Stacey Young passed away peacefully surrounded by her family and children, her husband announced today (inset). Since 2016, the mother of four had been bravely fighting the disease out of the public eye with her partner by her side. She first met the Everytime You Go Away hit maker on the set of a music video in 1987 before the pair fell in love, married and started a family together. Posting to Twitter this afternoon, Paul paid tribute to his wife (pictured together, left) writing: 'Sadly Stacey has passed away today after a two year fight with brain cancer. She died peacefully at our home surrounded by family, friends and her four children: Levi, Layla, Grady and Jude (together, right).' Condolences poured in from across the music industry with the founding member of Spandau Ballet Steve Norman said he was shocked to hear the news and described Stacey as ‘such a character and so down to earth’. Comedian Julian Clarey added: ‘So sorry to hear that Stacey Young has passed away. She was so kind, funny and bright.’ The news comes just days after Labour peer Dame Tessa Jowell publicly revealed she was undergoing treatment for brain cancer.

He was the only one wearing a seat belt - and the only one to come out alive. Today the driver was sentenced to four and a half years detention and also disqualified from driving for seven years and three months. Outside court victim Darnell Harte's sisters (left) wept as they slammed the sentence and said they 'have to live with the sight of seeing their little brother through a window with his faced smashed in'.

Mark Dillon, 55, of East Orchard Lane, Fazakerley, and taxi driver Robert Sloan, 46, of Steeple View, Kirkby, were also jailed for 26 months and 12 months respectively for making and organising huge deliveries of cash under orders from McDowell.

Norfolk County Council's official Twitter account posted on Thursday afternoon: 'The sun has got it's [sic] hat on and there's no gritting tonight #NorfolkWinter.' The reference to 'The Sun Has Got His Hat On' from the 1985 musical Me and My Girl backfired after temperatures plummeted overnight. The council apologised to furious motorists who blasted it over the tweet saying road conditions were 'atrocious' the following morning. The embarrassing blunder deepened as Norfolk Police was forced to issue an icy roads alert after receiving 37 reports of road crashes at 9.30am.

Drug dealer who traded speed for stolen goods is jailed

A hoarder who dealt in drugs and stolen goods from her terraced house has been jailed after police discovered the largest haul of stolen property they had ever seen. Officers had to form a human chain to empty Lesley Mooney's home in Cleethorpes, North East Lincolnshire, of around 2,000 items worth £36,000. The 57-year-old had also rigged an elaborated CCTV system inside the house which showed her weighing and measuring wraps of amphetamine and distributing it to a constant stream of visitors between March 3 and 13 last year. It is thought that in some cases Mooney, who a court heard suffered from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), was handing over drugs in return for shoplifted items ranging from computer games to perfumes. At Grimsby Crown Court, Mooney was jailed for two-and-a-half years.

South Korean hospital fire leaves more than 30 dead

 A fire in Sejong General Hospital in the South Korean city of Miryang has killed 31 people and injured around 50 others.  The blaze suspected to have started in a first floor emergency room and the cause has not yet been determined. A fire station official claimed the situation was developing quickly and the death toll was expected to rise further. 

Paris on flood alert amid fears over Louvre artworks

Hundreds of people have been evacuated from their homes in Paris amid a flood alert as officials prepare to evacuate priceless artworks from the Louvre Museum. The Seine reached more than 18ft on Thursday evening at the Austerlitz bridge in the east of the city. It was expected to keep rising, reaching 20ft by Saturday - as high as the June 2016 flooding when authorities were forced to close several monuments, including the Louvre Museum. Paris police said in a statement on Thursday that 395 people have been evacuated protectively from their homes along the banks of the river in the Paris region. Meteo France said that exceptionally high levels of rain this winter were to blame for the floods, with rainfall in Paris twice as high as normal. In addition to the capital, where the Seine river is expected to keep rising until Saturday, other regions are threatened in the north and east of the country. Thirteen departments across France remain on alert for floods as heavy rainfall continues to batter many areas.

Train derails near Milan killing at least four people

At least four people are dead, 10 others seriously injured, and more than 100 have minor injuries after a packed commuter train derailed in Pioltello, around 40km from Milan, around 7am on Thursday. At least six people were trapped inside one of the carriages, with emergency services working to free them. The train was on its way from Cremona to the Garibaldi Port station in Milan when it derailed between Segrate and Pioltello, according to local media. Emergency services are investigating whether a coupling link between two carriages was to blame for the accident.
