'Charmed belongs to us!': Holly Marie Combs hits out at CW's plan to reboot the beloved TV series without the original stars

The CW announced plans to resurrect Charmed - without any of the original stars - on Thursday.

And it didn't take long to gather a backlash on social media after co-star Holly Marie Combs shared the news on Twitter the same day.

The 44-year-old, who played Piper, started off by posting a simple message saying: 'We wish them well. #Charmed.'

When that was seen by almost 3,000 fans, many of them annoyed about the reboot, she ramped up her response.

'Here’s the thing,' she tweeted to her 907K followers, 'until you ask us to rewrite it like [original writer] Brad Kern did weekly don’t even think of capitalizing on our hard work.

'Charmed belongs to the 4 of us, our vast amount of writers, crews and predominantly the fans. FYI you will not fool them by owning a title/stamp. So bye.'

The show ran from 1998 to 2006 on The WB and starred Holly Marie, Shannen Doherty and Alyssa Milano as the witchy Halliwell sisters Piper, Prue and Phoebe.

Rose McGowen joined the clan as Paige after Prue's death at the end of season 3.

CW described its new show as a 'fierce, funny, feminist reboot of the original series that centers on three sisters in a college town who discover they are witches.

'Between vanquishing supernatural demons, tearing down the patriarchy, and maintaining familial bonds, a witch’s work is never done.'

That certainly didn't go down well with the Pretty Little Liars star who tweeted on Friday: 'Guess we forgot to do that the first go around. Hmph.'

The reboot will be set in the present day, unlike last year's aborted remake which was set to take place in the late 1970s.

The present setting would potentially allow former castmembers to be featured either as regulars or guest stars.

Producers on the upcoming series will be Jennie Urman, Jessica O’Toole and Amy Rardin.
