Liverpool 2-3 West Brom: Rodriguez inspires FA Cup upset

LIVERPOOL 2-3 WEST BROM - JOE BERNSTEIN AT ANFIELD: Liverpool were dumped out of the FA Cup in possibly the most chaotic match ever witnessed at Anfield. The first half alone over-ran by seven minutes because of two lengthy decisions involving the controversial new video assistant referee. The exit of Jurgen Klopp's side was self-inflicted with dreadful defending leading to two goals for West Brom's Jay Rodriguez – currently waiting to hear if he'll face an FA charge for racial abuse – and an own goal from Joel Matip. But that only tells half the story of the farce that added to the Saturday night drama.

Ex-Barcelona boss Enrique is now top of Chelsea's wishlist

The Mail on Sunday have learned that the former Barcelona boss has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Conte within Stamford Bridge. Enrique's availability — he left the Nou Camp in the summer — has elevated him above the likes of Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri and Atletico Madrid's Diego Simeone, both of whom have two years to run on their deals.

At the entrance to the Coventry Stadium, a brick-built turnstile block lies in ruins. It was burned down a few weeks ago by vandals. Charred beams criss-cross the rubble.

The Chilean, earning over half a million pounds a week once his image rights and signing-on fee are taken into account, made his debut at Huish Park in the FA Cup fourth-round tie at Yeovil.

A serious Achilles injury has kept Cazorla sidelined, with his last appearance for the Gunners coming in the Champions League against Ludogorets in October 2016. He said he wants to be back in 2019,

Although City have the most expensive squad in the Premier League, Guardiola insists they haven't got the unlimited funds required to fight on four fronts.

Rafa Benitez’s future at Newcastle United beyond next summer will be determined over the next four days and what the club can salvage from the January transfer window.

A tournament that began with Novak Djokovic rallying his fellow players to fight for better pay and conditions ends, almost inevitably, with 36-year-old tennis icon Roger Federer centre-stage.

Less than two years out from the World Cup there are young players everywhere looking to make their mark while older players are having to raise their standards to fight for their places.

VAR causes havoc during Liverpool's Cup tie with West Brom

Video Assistant Referee has caused more controversy with two major decisions going against West Brom during their FA Cup tie with Liverpool. Their clash was the only game selected from this weekend's FA Cup fixtures to use VAR to overturn decisions and it was called upon three times just in the first half alone.

Liverpool 2-3 West Brom PLAYER RATINGS:

Liverpool were dumped out of the FA Cup by West Brom in a match littered with Video Assistant Referee referrals which caused confusion on the pitch and in the stands on Saturday. Jay Rodriguez scored twice in the first 11 minutes, following Firmino's opener, with Joel Matip's own goal giving the visitors a two-goal cushion. Salah's first FA Cup goal, and his 25th of the season, set up a thrilling finale but the Baggies held on to reach the fifth round for the third time in the last four seasons. Sportsmail's Jack Gaughan rated the players.

JOE BERNSTEIN AT ANFIELD: West Brom manager Alan Pardew warned that VAR will spoil the entertainment for football fans and cause players injury after a controversial Anfield night.

The West Bromwich Albion manager Alan Pardew said neither interested club had yet lodged an offer, and he does not want the situation to drag into deadline day.

NEW The forward brushed aside speculation over his future by bagging a brace in the Ligue 1 leaders' 4-0 win against Montpellier, in a game that saw Edinson Cavani become club record scorer.

SHEFF UTD 1-0 PRESTON - TIM ABRAHAM AT BRAMALL LANE: Sheffield United striker Billy Sharp scored from the spot as they reached the fifth round of the FA Cup.

MILLWALL 2-2 ROCHDALE - MATTHEW SMITH AT THE NEW DEN: Thirty-four league places separated these two sides, but this was tempered enough by wholesale changes to almost allow a shock to materialise.

Newport County 1-1 Tottenham: Late Kane goal saves Spurs

NEWPORT 1-1 TOTTENHAM - OLIVER HOLT AT RODNEY PARADE: Harry Kane hit an 82nd-minute equaliser to save Tottenham from an FA Cup nightmare at League Two Newport County in the fourth round on Saturday. Padraig Amond headed home a deserved opener to give the Welsh club the lead before half time. But Kane, who started the match in a strong XI alongside Jan Vertonghen and Fernando Llorente, tapped in following a neat flick from substitute Son Heung-min to keep eight-time champions Spurs in the hat.

Newport County 1-1 Tottenham - SEVEN THINGS YOU MISSED

Tottenham were held to a 1-1 draw in their FA Cup fourth round clash with Newport County on Saturday night, with the Welsh minnows delighted to earn a replay at Wembley. The League Two side took the lead in the first-half when Robbie Willmott's cross was met by Padraig Amond who, rising high above everyone, headed home to send their fans into raptures. Harry Kane spared Tottenham's blushes though as he leveled with less than 10 minutes to go. The deadly striker tapped in at the back post from a corner after a stunning flick from Son Heung-min. Here, Sportsmail brings you a round-up of all the things you may have missed.

Michael Flynn may have been 'the proudest manager in the country' after his Newport County minnows frustrated the millionaires of Spurs, but he was still 'gutted' not to have hung on for victory.

The game against Charlton which was to have commemorated the life of Armfield did not go ahead because of a waterlogged pitch, but nothing could diminish the acts of remembrance.

IAN RIDLEY: Occasionally, as a sports writer you feel called upon to do more than enjoy the privileges of witnessing great events and are offered the chance to do something good, and for greater good.

NOTTS COUNTY 1-1 SWANSEA - ADAM CRAFTON AT MEADOW LANE: When the oldest club size up their chances in the oldest competition, we can be forgiven for surrendering to nostalgia.

WIGAN 2-0 WEST HAM - OLIVER TODD AT THE DW STADIUM: West Ham went out of the FA Cup in disgrace after Arthur Masuaku was sent off for spitting in their humbling fourth-round defeat at Wigan Athletic.

Neil Warnock: 'I don't want a minute's silence when I die'

EXCLUSIVE BY OLIVER HOLT: Neil Warnock will be 70 this year and mourning for men he counts as contemporaries has begun to change him. It is not that age has wearied him. It has most definitely not done that. But it has made him think more about his love for the game he has worked in all his adult life and the message he would like to spread in the time as a manager he has left. 'Cyrille Regis dies, Jimmy Armfield dies,' says Warnock, as he gazes out of the window of his office at the Cardiff City training ground. 'People all around me from my era are dying or dead. You start to think about that. I've started to think even more about how I want to give as much enjoyment as I can to the supporters and the people who love the game while I'm still here.'

Valencia 1-4 Real Madrid: Ronaldo scores penalty brace

VALENCIA 1-4 REAL MADRID - PETE JENSON: Penalty king Cristiano Ronaldo sunk Valencia with two first-half spot-kicks as Real Madrid won 4-1 at Mestalla. Still sporting a black-eye from the second of the two goals he scored last weekend, he made it four goals in two league matches and with late strikes from Marcelo and Toni Kroos Madrid are now just two points behind third-placed Valencia. No one in La Liga history has taken as many penalties as Ronaldo now. He beat previous record holder Hugo Sanchez who scored 56 from his 71. Ronaldo has buried 61 of his 72. Ronaldo’s name was written all over the first goal.

HUDDERSFIELD 1-1 BIRMINGHAM AT THE JOHN SMITH'S STADIUM: In a dour game Steve Mounie gave the Premier League side a lead before Lukas Jutkiewicz levelled in front of empty seats.

SOUTHAMPTON 1-0 WATFORD - TOM FARMERY AT ST MARY'S: A first goal of the season from Jack Stephens put Southampton through to the fifth round of the FA Cup.

HULL 2-1 FOREST - ALAN BIGGS AT THE KCOM STADIUM: Jarrod Bowen’s brilliance illuminated Hull’s path to the fifth round in a surprise win over the recent conquerors of Arsenal and Wolves.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has revealed the game's leading managers expressed their view to the Premier League in the summer but nothing was done.

Alvaro Morata's return to the Chelsea team may be delayed by personal grief after the death of a close friend in a car accident. He was given permission to take time out away from treatment last week.

Toni Duggan: 'What we want is the best person for the job'

When she was 17, Toni Duggan had her photograph taken at the Nou Camp alongside a poster of Lionel Messi. Last September, now 26, she had her picture taken with Luis Suarez. In the Messi photograph she was just another tourist at Barcelona's museum, albeit one who had a promising career at Everton Ladies. In the Suarez picture, they are sitting next to each other in the club's official team photo.

MIKE DICKSON IN MELBOURNE: Saying that life has taken a turn for the better for Caroline Wozniacki in the last couple of months does not really cover it.

You have to go back to August 2015 to find the last time McIlroy and Woods both played in the same week. Boy, over the last three days, have they shown us what we’ve been missing.

Paris Saint-Germain winger Lucas Moura last played for Brazil in 2016 and Tottenham would need to apply for a work permit as part of any transfer.

SIR CLIVE WOODWARD's guide to the Six Nations

The Six Nations is fast approaching with the first set of matches taking place next weekend. This year's Championship is surrounded by anticipation with it promising to be one of the most hotly-contested tournaments seen in recent years. Sportsmail's SIR CLIVE WOODWARD gives you his guide to the competition and picks out his favourites to go all the way ahead of the inaugural fixtures.

England are not good enough to win the World Cup - Johnson

EXCLUSIVE: England legend Martin Johnson has questioned whether Eddie Jones has a strong enough squad to win the World Cup. With 19 months until the tournament begins, Johnson is concerned that England do not have the depth required to lift the Webb Ellis Trophy. The World Cup-winning captain says Jones must unearth five new players during the Six Nations for a chance to emulate the 2003 heroes.

The Six Nations gets underway on Saturday with France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales looking to topple England. Big names pick their winners, and losers, from this year’s tournament.

EXCLUSIVE: The BBC and ITV own the UK rights, having kept chief rivals Sky at bay to protect the competition’s audience. However Amazon are keen on developing a sporting portfolio.

NIGEL OWENS: Ahead of the Six Nations, the legendary referee runs you through laws to watch out for this year. There will be no repeat of ‘ruckless’ rugby while backchat will be heavily punished.

INTERVIEW BY NIK SIMON: It takes some help from a local Bridgend schoolboy, walking home with his grandmother, to find house No17. ‘That’s where Rhys Webb lives!’ he shrieks

There will be no repeat of the no-ruck ‘fox’ tactics when Italy face England in Rome next week. Conor O’Shea bamboozled England last year when his players infamously won the breakdown battle

England lock Courtney Lawes' rugby is like child's play

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW BY NIK SIMON: Chaos ensues in the Lawes household. In the living room, two-year-old Teddy is crying about having his photo taken. In the kitchen, fellow England lock Joe Launchbury and his family have paid a visit to meet the newborn twins, Hugo and Otto, and their daughter has just trapped her finger in the door. ‘Welcome to the mad house,’ says Courtney Lawes with a laugh, as Nelly, four, pulls herself on to his shoulders. ‘When I’m not playing rugby, I’m pretty much a full-time climbing frame for the kids.’ Next month, Lawes will be crunching opponents at Twickenham, but there is a softer side to England’s enforcer. The shelves are covered with cards of congratulations, with Eddie Jones among the long list of well-wishers following the family’s double arrival on December 28.

Caroline Wozniacki win epic Australian Open final

MIKE DICKSON IN MELBOURNE: An emotional Caroline Wozniacki is finally a Grand Slam champion and world No 1 again after edging Simona Halep out of an epic Australian Open final. There was ecstasy for the 27 year-old Dane and only bitter disappointment for Simona Halep after she finally wrapped up a 7-6 3-6 6-4 victory that took two hours and 49 minutes to win what was her third Major final. Wozniacki collapsed to the floor in tears after Halep hit a backhand into the net to be broken for the fifth time. She will return to the world No 1 position exactly six years after giving it up – the longest gap in reclaiming the position in WTA history.

In 643 days’ time, Eddie Jones is hoping to lead England into the World Cup final in Japan. Former England captain Martin Johnson discusses whether the current crop are the real deal.

The 32-year-old joined Shandong Luneng from Southampton for £12million in July 2016 and is on a huge salary at around £13.5m a season but the Chinese side are willing to cut their losses.

Aymeric Laporte was left out of Athletic Bilbao's squad against Eibar in La Liga on Friday night with Manchester City closing in on their club-record deal for the French centre-back.

Peterborough 1-5 Leicester

PETERBOROUGH 1-5 LEICESTER - LAURIE WHITWELL AT THE ABAX STADIUM: Claude Puel has quietly gone about subverting expectations since taking the Leicester job and here was further evidence it is unwise to write off the Frenchman too soon. There was palpable unrest at Leicester’s manager making ten changes for this awkward-looking FA Cup contest at League One Peterborough, not least from Paul Merson, who branded the decision a ‘disgrace’ and ‘an absolute joke’. Merson’s impassioned defence of a grand competition with Leicester secure in the Premier League was understandable but Puel knows his squad and was confident his selection would overcome Grant McCann’s side, while also providing valuable minutes to fringe players.

Bayern Munich 5-2 Hoffenheim: Lewandowski inspires revival

BAYERN MUNICH 5-2 HOFFENHEIM: Former Arsenal man Serge Gnabry had a hand the visitors' goals - which saw them race to a two-goal lead - before Jupp Heynckes' side recovered to come out comfortable winners.
