Kate and Alicia's fashion face-off: Oscar-winner Vikander looks radiant in blue at the royal black tie dinner in Stockholm - but it's the Duchess who triumphs in her golden gown

  • William and Kate arrived in Stockholm today to kick off their Scandinavian tour
  • The couple were honoured at a black tie dinner by the British Ambassador
  • The Duchess looked elegant in a  £1,945 gold satin gown by British brand Erdem
  • Actress Alicia Vikander, 29, opted for royal blue, but paled next to Kate

As an Oscar-winning actress, Alicia Vikander is used to being the centre of attention.

But tonight the Swedish star was left in the shadows as the Duchess of Cambridge stole the spotlight at a royal black tie dinner.

Vikander, 29, was among the high-profile guests at a dinner honouring the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at the home of the British Ambassador in Stockholm on Tuesday night.

Kate, 36, opted for a silk Erdem oriental-inspired gown, while the actress, who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2015, cut a more low-key figure in a cobalt-blue custom Louis Vuitton dress.

Featuring an all-over floral print, fluted sleeves and a ruffle detail bodice and collar, the statement Erdem gown is a departure from Kate's favoured conservative looks, according to stylist Hannah Eichler

Kate, 36, looked breathtaking in the flowing £1,945 dress by British designer Erdem.

Featuring an all-over floral print, fluted sleeves and a ruffle detail bodice and collar, the statement gown is a departure from Kate's favoured conservative looks, according to an expert.

Hannah Eichler, Senior Brand Stylist at Oasis, said: 'Someone’s been swotting up on her Spring/Summer 2018 trends! Nailing a whopping three trends in one (oriental - tick, frills - tick, florals - tick).

'Kate’s made a real departure from the conservative looks she has become famed for.

'Kate’s really flown the flag for British style for her royal visit, wearing a dress by her much loved British label Erdem, who’s designs she’s worn countless times before. She’s an ambassador in more ways than one.'

The duchess, who is six months pregnant, also won praise from fans on Twitter.

'It's different from the habitual in HRH but it's beautiful!', one fan tweeted excitedly.

'She just suits everything', one fan wrote.

She completed the understated look with a classic pair of black pumps, accessorising with a square box clutch bag as the A list group made their way to dinner.

Hannah added that Alicia's ensemble looks like it could have been taken from Kate's wardrobe.

'Whilst notoriously hard to wear, Alicia’s made pleats a walk in the park by opting for a figure flattering style which nips her in at the waist,' Hannah added.

One fan tweeted: 'I like what she is wearing, she is one of my favourite actresses too.'

Princess Victoria was similarly patriotic in a black satin midi dress from Swedish brand Stylein's autumn/winter 2018 collection featuring a draped asymmetric silhouette. She then accessorised her look with opaque tights and T-bar Dolce& Gabbana embellished heels.

The dinner marks the end of a busy day of royal engagements for William and Kate, who kicked off their four-day Scandinavian tour with a visit to a 'bandy hockey' rink, a walkabout in sub-zero temperatures and a private lunch with the Swedish royals.

The Cambridges will visit Norway later this week.
