Police are investigating the deaths of two people believed to have suffered a fatal gas poisoning after their bodies were found in a flat in a smart stockbroker-belt town.

Detectives are not ruling out murder or a suicide pact and are treating the deaths as unexplained with post-mortem examinations due to be carried out.

Officers were called to the property in Grove Hill Road, Tunbridge Wells, Kent yesterday after concerns from neighbours about the people inside.

Police are understood to have received a 999 call from a family friend who was looking through the window and could see the body of a man on a bed.

Residents in nearby properties were told to leave their homes as the emergency services dealt with an incident amid fears of a gas leak.

Emergency services and gas engineers were sent to the property with one theory being investigated that the people succumbed to carbon monoxide or gas poisoning.

The bodies were removed from the flat around Midnight last night.

A Kent Police spokesman said: 'Kent Police was called at 12.06pm on Wednesday regarding concern for the welfare of two people at a flat in Grove Hill Road, Tunbridge Wells.

'Police officers, South East Coast Ambulance Service and Kent Fire and Rescue Service all attended the address and the two people were declared dead at the scene.

'The deaths are currently being treated as unexplained and post mortem examinations will be carried out.

'The occupants of neighbouring addresses were asked to temporarily leave their homes as a precaution while SGN engineers attended to check the premises.

'Residents have now been permitted to return and there is no threat to public safety.'
