'It's just a hairstyle we all copied from Queen Nofretari!' Bo Derek speaks out to DEFEND Kim Kardashian for calling her cornrows 'Bo Derek braids'

  • Kim, 37, took to Snapchat on Sunday to unveil her silver cornrows in a short video, calling them her 'Bo Derek braids'
  • The reality star quickly came under fire for attributing her new look to a white actress who wore the traditionally black hairstyle in the 1979 film 10
  • Bo took to social media on Wednesday to share photos of herself, Kim, and Queen Nefertari sporting cornrows, saying 'it's just a hairstyle'
  • 'We all copied Queen Nofretari,' she added, spelling Nefertari's name incorrectly

Kim Kardashian courted controversy this week when she debuted silver cornrows and called them her 'Bo Derek braids' — and now Bo Derek herself is weighing in on the backlash.

Less than a week after Kim, 37, was accused of cultural appropriation, Bo, 61, took to social media on Wednesday to share photos of herself, Kim, and Queen Nefertari sporting braids, all while sticking up for the reality star for crediting her as the inspiration behind her new look.

'Hey! It’s just a hairstyle that I wore in the movie "10" @kimkardashian calls it the Bo Derek because she copied my particular pattern of braids,' she wrote. 'I copied it from Ann-Margret’s backup singer from her Vegas Nightclub Show. And we all copied Queen Nofretari [sic]. I hope Her Royal Highness is flattered.'

Despite her attempts to squash the backlash, some people weren't impressed with the actress' explanation.

'It's not just a hairstyle!! It's the meaning behind the hairstyle,' Charmaine Cox wrote, and Pamela Renee P. added: 'You ain't no better than Kim.'

'Oh thank you white lady,' someone else tweeted. 'Who knew that we needed YOUR explanation; whoever asked you to explain did us all a favor. Thank you, oh white queen.'

And a man named Anthony asked Bo to 'please learn what cultural appropriation is.'

Others were quick to point out that she actually misspelled Queen Nefertari's name, writing 'Nofretari' instead.

Backlash: The 61-year-old actress was quickly criticized for her post, with many arguing it's not 'just a hairstyle' and pointing out that she spelled Queen Nefertari's name incorrectly

'Queen Nefertari??? Nefertiti? Girl, come correct or please don,' someone named Coco wrote, while Savannah Downing accused her of glossing over history.

'It's cornrows, and Black women wear them,' she tweeted. 'You can't skip from 1979 white ladies in Hollywood and Vegas all the way back to mummified Egypt and gloss over the history of cornrows worn by Black women in the US #ignoranceisbliss.'

Although Bo received plenty of flack for her message, there were people who praised her for it and agreed that it was just a hairstyle.

'I'm not a Kim fan, but they do look good on her,' one person wrote. 'Bo Derek is a goddess too. Let's just appreciate beautiful women utilizing a beautiful hairstyle.'

In 2015, when Kim's sister Kyle Jenner sparked a similar conversation about cultural population after she started sporting cornrows, Bo told New York magazine that she found the controversy 'stupid.'

'It’s a hairdo! That’s all it is,' she said, adding: 'No, seriously, of all the important racial and cultural issues we have right now, people are going to focus on a hairstyle? No, no. I’ll save my efforts toward important racial and cultural issues.'

Kim unveiled her silver cornrows on Snapchat on Sunday, and she quickly came under fire for attributing her new look to a Bo — a white woman who has been incorrectly credited for popularizing the traditionally black hairstyle.

However, she made it clear that she doesn't care what her critics think.

Posting a slew of very racy pictures on Instagram on Monday evening, the mother-of-three captioned an image of herself on the phone with the words:' Hi, can I get zero f***s please, thanks.'

Wearing a dressing gown and socks, she was still sporting the blonde braids which led to the initial backlash.

When she first unveiled her cornrows in a Snapchat video, she said: 'So guys, I did Bo Derek braids, and I’m really into it.'

However, the comment was immediately blasted by her followers, who branded her 'disrespectful' and accused of her cultural appropriation.

The TV star was immediately slammed by her followers after revealing in the selfie video she was 'really into' her new look, inspired by the famous American actress.

One fan responded by writing: 'I’m still a bit peeved on how @KimKardashian had the audacity to call these braids “Bo Derrick” braids.'

While another added: 'Kim Kardashian on snap talking about some Bo Derek braids. Kim they are called CORN ROWS.'

One fan was more critical, writing: 'Kim K got braids like these. And gave credit to Bo Derek for the style. Am i wrong for being bothered. Because I’m super bothered. That’s who tf you give credit for for that style !? Seriously.'

Others pointed out that her braids are actually Fulani braids, a hairstyle derived from the Fulani people of East Africa and West Africa.

'They are called Fulani braids or some may even say corn rows, You could of called them either one but you called them 'Bo Derek' giving credit to a white woman for a black style knowing you already catch heat for culture culturing.'

'You should be ashamed of yourself for calling your Fulani braids, bo derick braids....you are truly a culture vulture [sic],' someone else wrote.

Another added: 'Kim Kardashian should have learned by now how to properly deal with black culture and considering she has three black kids this behavior is disturbing.'

And one person blasted: 'First of all, f*** you @KimKardashian for wearing cornrows and calling them "Bo Derrick braids." Second of call f*** you again for crediting the creation of "Bo Derrick braids" to a white woman who was culturally appropriating cornrows to begin with.'

However a selection of fans saw the more humorous side and joked of her comments with a variety of memes.

One wrote: 'Kim Kardashian really said “Bo Derek braids” knowing damn well what she was doing.'

While another added: 'Kim called corn rows “bo Derek braids”. This is why people don’t like her lmao.'

Yet, a number of other followers rushed to defend her, and claimed fans were making a big deal out of a playful post.
