A devastated twin is heartbroken after her 'beautiful' sister died from killer flu when she fell ill on Christmas Day. Engineering student Melissa Whiteley, 18, (right) could barely walk and tests revealed she was suffering from sepsis, flu, pneumonia and a fungal infection. The teenager, from Hanford, Staffordshire, was placed in an induced coma but did not recover and died one month later. She passed away at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester surrounded by her loved-ones - including her twin sister Megan (far left) - on January 27. Melissa (inset, left with her sister Megan, right) were close sisters and went to school together.

A property on an island which is so remote it can only be accessed by a 125ft footbridge has gone on the market for £250,000. The house, called 'Tigh Na Sith', which is Gaelic for 'House of Peace', is situated on the western coast of Great Bernera, in the Outer Hebrides (main image). With a price tag of a quarter-of-a-million pounds, the three-bedroom house offers panoramic seas views of the Atlantic Ocean as well the added extra of an endless pool and sauna (bottom right). It is also kitted out with modern decking (bottom left) and a large kitchen (bottom centre). Part of the Outer Hebridean Island of Lewis, the house sits across from a sheltered lagoon and dates back to 1910, with beautiful gardens in a tranquil setting.

WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT Jesica Hogan, based in Riley, Kansas, welcomed her fifth child and only son Max in July last year and has just opened up about her incredible birth story. The mother, who gave birth at the Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan, Kansas, had contractions for several days before Max's birth, without going into labor. She and her husband Travis even went to the hospital a first time, but ended up coming home for several days of waiting. Around that time, Jesica began to worry she wouldn't be able to tell when labor would actually start. Eventually, one night, Jesica started having contractions again and felt her water break, after which she and Travis rushed to the hospital.

The motorist who witnessed the crash was driving past junction 14 of the M4 in Berkshire, when she saw a black Jaguar saloon swerve suddenly across the road. As the driver lost control of his flash car, a motorist on his left was forced to veer out of the way and inadvertently sent himself careering towards a grassy embankment. The car hit the verge at 50mph and flew up into the air, tumbling over, before landing with a crash.

Viewers have slammed an unemployed woman who turned up an hour late to work after being offered a job by a multi-millionaire. Georgia, 18, from Crosby, Merseyside, got through 10 jobs in just two years and admitted she was struggling to decide what she wanted to do with her life. Ivana Smit, 18, (left) was building a successful career as a model in Kuala Lumpur when she plunged to her death on December 7, in what local cops called a drug and booze-fueled accident. Now a British private investigator and a Dutch pathologist are raising doubts about whether the death was truly accidental. Meanwhile, a new surveillance photo (inset) has emerged showing American citizen Alexander Amado Johnson, 45, carrying Ivana from a club before they ended up at his apartment with his wife Luna (together right).

Richard Prior's widow has confirmed her late husband slept with Marlon Brando. TMZ questioned the legendary comedian's wife after Quincy Jones made the claim in an astonishing interview with Vulture. The coastal carpet python was photographed slithering through a big pile of mulch on the Sunshine Coast, but managed to remain cleverly hidden. Snake catcher Lockie Gilding posted a 'spot the snake' challenge to his business Facebook page, completely baffling his 54,000 followers. This is the horrific moment an angry BMW driver killed a car wash worker with a single punch because he was too slow to clean his car at 3.30am in Stupino, near Moscow, Russia. The furious motorist was caught on CCTV throwing punches at two sleepy employees who did not react fast enough when he arrived. One of the men fell over on his back and crashed his head on the floor. He later died of head injuries.

Tens of thousands took part in the display in Pyongyang's Kim Il Sung square (main) which featured tanks, armoured vehicles, troops and an appearance by North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un and his wife (top right). It came a day before the start of the Winter Olympics and as Kim's trusted sister prepared to meet South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

The London Power Tunnels project has created a new 32km electricity superhighway deep below the capital, (see map, right) which helps keep Londoners connected to safe and reliable electricity supplies. It will supply 20 per cent of the capital's growing electricity needs using 125 miles of high voltage cabling. This new National Grid project is the most significant addition to London's electricity system since the 1960s. The tunnels, (left) run from Hackney in the east to Willesden in the west, and from Kensal Green to Wimbledon in the south. Also pictured (middle) is a graphic showing how the tunnels were built.

A driver was fined £70 when his parking permit was hidden by snow on his car's windscreen (pictured, left).   Oliver Claxton, from Chester Green, Derby, who had been working away in London, was surprised when he returned home to find he'd been issued the charge (pictured, right). The 30-year-old said he had never moved the permit from his car, so has challenged the fine from Derby City Council.

Brazilian Sandra Passos, 28, built a career as a model in China a decade ago but went on to open her own agency. Now she's back in her hometown near Rio to school a new generation. She's been teaching youngsters the basics of modelling and English and is hoping they will find work in Guangzhou, southern China.

SpaceX billionaire Elon Musk shared a final photo on Wednesday of the Tesla Roadster that he launched into space on Tuesday. With a mannequin named 'Starman' inside of the car, Musk's photo showed the roadster in an elliptical orbit around the sun with an increasingly distant crescent Earth in the background (pictured). 'Last pic of Starman in Roadster enroute [sic] to Mars orbit and then the Asteroid Belt,' he wrote on Instagram. The 250-million-mile journey will be taking Starman in a solar orbit with a high point just beyond Mars, as initially predicted by SpaceX. Earlier reports had claimed the dummy was heading further out into the solar system towards the asteroid belt because one of the boosters of the Falcon Heavy - the jumbo rocket on which the Tesla was launched (inset) - burned for too long.

NEW This 1961 Aston Martin is set to become the most expensive British car to sell in Europe when it goes under the hammer this summer and is expected to exceed a £10 million price. Described as 'the most important DB4GT Zagatos in history', the car once driven by legendary British driver Jim Clark, pictured inset, will be sold at the Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed Sale on 13 July.

NEW Leah Washington, 20, from Barnsley said that she believes she and boyfriend Joe Pugh will go the distance after all they've been through. Leah, then 18, lost her left leg in the Smiler (inset) crash at Alton Towers when their rollercoaster carriage smashed into a stationary test car. Leah now wears a £60K prosthetic leg (right), while Joe also had to learn to walk again after being injured.

Newly released images have revealed a stunning look at the site of an ancient Mayan 'megalopolis' in Guatemala, which now lies buried beneath the jungle foliage. Researchers announced the groundbreaking discovery of more than 60,000 previously unknown structures just last week, including pyramids, palaces, and causeways, that once made up a massive pre-Columbian civilization.

The estate, on the western shore of Lake Tahoe, in Homewood, California, was the setting for the grand first communion party thrown by Corleone, played by Al Pacino, for his son at the beginning of the award-winning movie. NEW Dramatic footage shows a group of forest rangers in South India's Nilgiris Forest Reserve trying to retrieve the body of a baby elephant when suddenly they had to run for their lives when grieving elephants started charging at them. As soon as they inched closer to the carcass the mother of the calf, who had been guarding the carcass of her baby, emerged from the bushes and menacingly attacks them. The rangers had to abort the plan as two elephants stood guarding the calf's carcass.

In the wake of the #MeToo movement, Sailor, 19, Paulina, 52, and Robyn Lawley, 28, were among the cast of models who stripped down and turned their bodies into canvases covered with meaningful words that represent how they see themselves. The stunning black and white photos were shot by Taylor Ballantyne for the magazine's new ' In Her Own Words ' project, which allowed the models to share their truth and become active participants in the campaign that was led by an all-female Sports Illustrated team.

Eight people have died and three remain missing in southern China after a massive sinkhole yesterday swallowed a major road in the middle of a city. The eight-lane road caved in after a water leak occurred on the construction site of a subway station in Foshan, a city of seven million people, authorities said Thursday. Nine people were rescued from the sinkhole, which is said to be as big as two basketball courts. The condition of the survivors are reportedly stable.

Using a drone, robotic rovers and an inflatable greenhouse (pictured), the astronauts will carry out 19 experiments in the Dhofar desert in Oman, picked for its resemblance to Mars. Seen from space, the Dhofar Desert is a flat, brown expanse and few animals or plants survive its temperatures that can top 125 degrees Fahrenheit, or 51 degrees Celsius. More than 200 scientists from 25 nations have chosen it as their location to field-test technology for a manned mission to the red planet which Nasa hopes to achieve by the 2030s.

This adorable one-month-old kitten has no fear as she pushes around a dog and shows him who is the boss after kicking him out of his own bed. The footage, recorded on February 4 in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, shows the tiny kitten forcing the much bigger dog out of his bed. Despite being far smaller, the kitten is fierce and refuses to let the dog get back onto the bed, swiping at him whenever he tries to climb back in.

At the end of last year, the Daily Mail  appealed for our readers to open their homes to the older dogs who often languish unwanted in rescue centres because of their age. We featured the stories of 12 adorable animals who'd all ended up homeless late in life and were looking for a new family. So, how did they fare?
