'She suffered with it all her life. She punished herself. It's a tough gig, to have her mother walk. She came back into her life later.'

Paul was asked by some of the other contestants if she ever forgave her mother.

'Yeah. But she said, "My mother only wants me to go to the best restaurant tables in London and to go to Wimbledon."

'Wow... I thought, "Holy, should you be telling me this? But do go on".'

Paul also said of Diana's mother, 'She wasn't a very kind person. Not very motherly.

'No, Diana was a daughter that came very late and she left her husband and Earl Spencer and went to Australia.'

In the months leading up to the Princess's death, the pair were tragically not on speaking terms.

When Diana died, staunch catholic Frances turned to her faith for solace when forced to grieve in the glare of a media frenzy as millions mourned the Princess.

On ITV1's My Favourite Hymns, which was broadcast in 2002, Mrs Shand Kydd said that after learning of Diana's death in the early hours of August 31, 1997, she had been forced to grieve alone.

She said: 'I spent the night packing to go to Paris and then when I heard she'd died, I unpacked,' she said. 'I wasn't allowed to tell anyone for about an hour during which time heads of state will be told.

'That seemed to me very odd, if not insensitive, that I, her mother, couldn't tell anyone she was dead because of a rulebook from somewhere else.'

She claimed that she was not involved in the funeral arrangements and said that as a devout Roman Catholic she was devastated not to have seen Diana's body.

'I do remember being very surprised and rather hurt that I was not consulted about collecting her body or asked to go to Paris to do so,' she said. 'That seemed very tough. I was her only surviving parent.

'It meant that I never saw her when she had died and for a member of the Catholic Church you are encouraged to see dead people, your dear ones, so it was a bit harsh.'

Recalling the death of another child, after only ten hours of life, Mrs Shand Kydd said: 'So in fact, I have buried two children without seeing their bodies.'

Paul was Diana's butler for 10 years between 1987 and 1997, when Diana tragically died in a car crash.

And while there are plenty of conspiracy theories which rage on about the night in question, Paul maintains that the whole thing was a terrible tragedy.

'Yeah, it was an accident,' he said. 'In the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong man. It changed his life...'

Burrell also touched upon the sadness of the relationship between Diana and Prince Charles.

When asked why he didn't know what he had, Paul replied: 'Because he wanted something else. He didn't want her.'
